Fan looks to be a late model 11 blade. Im running the 9 blade early model fan, and have about 1/2 inch clearance to the rad

I'm new to the platform, but I did notice an awful lot of set-ups with the Filter Element bolted directly to the MAF (most notably the 3.5 HFM). Can you explain to me why this is efficient?

Working with the e46 platform, we obviously have a little more room in the bay...But I'm running a long tube intake with a filter element tucked into the bumper. Significantly more air is read by my MAF because the flow is smoothed out on it's way from the Filter to the MAF. Others have implemented a Velocity stack-type element with a larger filter attached in front and a length of silicone between the element and the MAF.

Just curious because it seems like there may be better ways to route the filter...especially just leaving it open in the bay...but really wondering how the 3.5 HFM really works and if any of what I mentioned above is even necessary.

      Cheers!

I'm no expert on the matter, but from what I've read, a K&N mounted to the MAF is not the most efficient intake, not to mention it will be sucking in hot air from the engine bay.

this is what I have currently. Not the best, but it works. I have a Kamotors intake enroute, so its a temporary situation at best.

Where is that airbox sucking air from? It's a little hard to tell in the pictures but is there a tube connecting it to the cover behind the headlights, or is it just open to the engine bay?

^ thats how I want to do my intake setup. OEM is cleanest by far.

Is that the M20 airbox minus the HFM?

I have bimmerworld boot to a 3.5hfm with a k&n directly on the hfm and a plastic heatshield. My meter is clocked at the 10 o'clock position.

I'm running a trm chip for lw fly, 3.5 hfm and stock injectors.

I have been getting a CEL for the MAF coming on at around 4k rpms on WOT, car runs fine though. Anyone else have this problem?

The turkey neck on my intake manifold is Very likely causing a slight vac leak too. I guess until I deal with that and my dirty icv I can't be sure, just wondering if I'm the only one with this oroblem.

                          Kthxbye

Do you have any pictures of how you got your maf to fit the airbox so nicely? Im in the middle of doing that as well.

That looks very nice. Are you going to have a cover over the intake? Looks very similar to the Castros box except it doesn't have a cover.
