Can you elaborate on your ceramic coating? Who did it and what temp coating did you get? I am looking at jet hot sterling right now for s38b36 headers which can get extremely hot in a e30's cramped engine bay. Comment

In bold is part of your loudness problem. No need for 3" piping on an NA motor. It's actually amplifying the sound.

It was done at the same shop here in Bend that does all of my PC work. I don't know the temp specs, I could probably find out. I considered JetHot, but the shipping hassles turned me off. It was much easier to find a place locally. Cost was about $14/ft.Comment

hmm, in actuality it looks more like the 10416, I'm not exactly sure on the exact model# but the actual muffler is around 12" in length with entirety around 20" in length with a 2.5in and out diameterComment

No. In a typical 6-2-1 E30 exhaust, everything past the last exhaust collector is trivial. Single 2.5 or 3.0 tubing post-merge will have an infinitesimal effect on power.

So what DOES affect power?- Exhaust primary size and length. People with Racelands are leaving area under the curve on the table as the primaries are HUGE.
- The quality of the merge also has an effect, though it is smaller in comparison. You can't see the quality of the merge from the outside, but if there is poor, bulky welding and bad pipe fitup, you stand to lose a whp or three at the highest flowrates.
- The geometry of your second merge collector (2 into 1) will also affect power-- angle of the merge, the size of the choke, length and angle of the post-choke transition (commonly called a megaphone).

It is not amplifying the sound. It is harder to damp the sound as efficiently. By sizing pipe smaller, you make it easier to quiet down an exhaust system from a geometry standpoint--that is, the smaller the piping is, the easier it is to quiet down a system by using smaller mufflers/resonators. So if you have a 3" exhaust, you must choose larger mufflers. Comment
