If you want to dyno the most inexpensive (and fun way to dyno) is to track at Thill then dyno @ MCE ; if you are not in norcal then perhaps go to harman motive down south?

if you run 235mm wide street tires in the rear or 245 you should be able to put down the power; if not perhaps corner balance time?

Ive been bugging a guy here who has some dyno connections to setup a dyno day. With almost 12k miles on it now, Im sure the motor is well broken in. Especially the way Ive been driving it! ;D Theres a shop near Sears Point that said they will give me 3 runs for $67.50 so I will probably do that when I have a long weekend up in San Jose.

As far as tires go, Im on 16s and don't think there are too many options in a 235 or 245 width, and the 225/45/16 is the comparable OEM size, so ...

Other than that, just working on little things to get it ready to have fun with the BAR. Im cleaning up the wiring adapter by using a rectangular C101 and new pins so its plug and play factory baller status, but I will also wire up the CEL at the same time. Then it will be just a matter of installing a charcoal canister and somehow getting a stock elbow on it, then biting my lip when I take it to them

Just crossed the 5k mark with the new setup and I have been having a blast. Im trying to dyno the car soon, but it may not happen for another month or two. I am taking the car to an auto-x and then driving back up to Washington for a week. Hitting the Maryhill Loops hillclimb that the BMW CCA is putting on too.

Just a few things I want to report for others considering this setup or a 24v swap.
#1- 24v motors are awesome, I loved the M20, but this is just another level.
#2- Im averaging around 25mpg, more if Im not driving like a dumbass everywhere, worst avg so far has been 24mpg on a full tank and that was with a lot of street driving and a lot more redline action.
#3- M42 radiator is good, even in the SoCal summer. I may upgrade later, but for now its doing just fine. Rarely heads past the middle point, and when it does, my electric fan is wired to kick on so its all good. No manual fan activate mode required when you do it right.
#4- Its totally fine driving around like an old lady. The M52 has plenty of torque, even with the S52 cams to just put around town. Not the fastest car out there, but my setup is very well balanced
#5- This setup builds power in a linear rise (I think thats the right word). Cant wait to see what it puts down on the dyno.
#6- TMS software works like a charm even if its not exactly for my setup.
#7- I want to get the rear sump conversion, but its not cheap so I think I need a skidplate ASAP, the E34 pan just hangs out there like a bad boxer with a glass chin just waiting to get punched
#8- 205 tires are way too narrow, Im waiting until Ive burned these up to purcahse some 225/45/16 Toyo R1R tires. Not ideal for the street/ daily driven car, but it should be fun and sticky.
#9- The G260 & 3.73 combo is good. I think I might want a taller read end to drop the RPMs a little on the freeway, but maybe the different muffler will quiet it down enough to make me happy.

I think thats all for now, not much more will be happening here until I dyno the car, or stuff starts to break. Lets hope that with all the BS that I already dealt with, the next post will be a dynochart

Hell of an adventure you have here. A lot of it reminds me of my first engine build experience. The utter despair and regret feeling is shitty, and I was putting feelers out for a not-quite-running car at one point because I was so angry every time I looked at the car that I figured that eating up to $10k in losses would be better than trying to make it work. It all worked out in the end and I am ~7000 miles in myself and having a lot of fun. Still, reading some of your older posts of regret definitely brought back some memories from about a year ago. I followed your lesson about letting experts do things (I bought a MM engine with every option & upgrade) and still got fucked (NOT MM's fault, their valve spring supplier at some point started selling garbage and I had springs crap out at 70 miles and 1000 miles...MM paid cross-country shipping on the whole engine once, the head the second time + my core engine, all repairs including 2 full head tear-downs, had my cams reground, ALL of this at zero expense to me, and still gave me back my core deposit). Your "lesson" about forgetting timelines is 100% accurate though lol. It took a good 10 months to get the built engine when I was expecting 7ish months, and it was a good 4 months or so that I was out of commission because of busted valve springs (and the cam company taking its sweet sweet time). I had no running car for 14 months and it was a pain, as well as a "test" of my relationship's strength (it passed just fine thankfully).

Anyway, your AL block swap is on my list of "someday" projects still. I love my 205bhp M42 because of the weight balance, and I bet that the AL M52 weighs about the same as the M42, but with a good amount more power and torque! Glad you are enjoying it!

Just crossed 10k miles on this setup. Still running like a champ, havent really done much with the car, engine wise. I do have a spare rectangular C101 that Im going to repin like I wanted to do from the beginning. I also ditched the pusher fan and had CAtuned install a Spal fan as a puller. Its what I wanted to do from the beginning but the old fan couldnt fit. Combine that with modified original wiring and it wasnt very efficient and my car almost overheated coming back from Seattle a month ago.



I still have a few things I want to do under the hood to clean it up, I have the M3 wiring harness cover that I bought off a friend while I still lived in Seattle. I have to find a way to get that to me

I wish i got 25mpg avg. I ran 21.5s on stock s50 tune (m52/s50 cams). Then i went to 24lbs and 3.5hfm with squid tune and its more like 17-18 in town 24-25 hwy andbthat was with 373 and g260. A couple of weeks ago i put in a 346 lsd. I got 26 on hwy and 19 town. It is hot here and i have a vert. Ive been top up and cold ass a/c for a solid month. I am going to rebuild my vanos soon and i am hoping that improves around town mileage at the least. Anyway if that isnt it im gonna look into a different tune. Everything else is new so id be out of options.

Happy to announce the car made it from Seattle to SoCal with zero problems. I averaged anywhere from 25-28mpg depending on how fast I was going and how many times I acted like a teenager. No burnouts yet, but I did drive it on Hicks Rd (local backroad in San Jose), and Mulholland in LA on the same day. It was a good day
