my 24v build, slightly different than the norm. Now with dyno numbers!
thanks, Im also very eager. Its been over 6 months since Ive been able to daily drive this car. I drove it every once in a while since it still ran, but it was very limited because it would start to overheat after ~5 miles. I still have a TON of respect and love for the M20 motor.
the motors are out there and can be had for cheap. I bought the bare long block with S52 cams and a S52 crank for a very reasonable price.
Im into this build a LOT more than Id care to admit, but I will have a great setup when Im done and that is worth every dollar spent.
I purchased my plane ticket back to Seattle, flying in on 10/4 and then the road trip home begins. Im excited, anxious and nervous because Ive been anticipating this moment for months now. I never expected this build to take this long, but at one point I decided I wanted to do it 100% right and not regret not doing anything. There are a few things that I already plan on changing but they are simple upgrades that can be done later.
oh btw :early:

They were finishing up the last few things and while the car was running they noticed an oil leak from between the head and the block. Im gutted. I've taken every precaution to make sure this is done right so that I dont have problems and its been one thing after another. Im committed at this point and dont have a way out without losing my ass on it.

Had a long talk with the mechanic and Im basically back to square one. Apparantly the valves and pistons had some contact and now the motor needs to get taken apart again. We arent really sure what happened, but they think the pistons could be the culprit. Im beyond frustrated right now, because I have tried extremely hard to do this build right and not cut any corners and Im still fucked. Motor will get pulled next monday and is going back to the machine shop to get torn down and see exactly what happened. I dont know who will be liable, but he is saying because I was the one who torqued the head down, its basically on me. I did very little work myself and it just happens to be the piece that has any liability tied to it. I've lost motivation, but I cant really do anything except keep going at this point. I've got so much money wrapped up into this that there is no way out....
Whats really frustrating is that I feel like my relationship with this mechanic has gone to shit. He is frustrated with me, because I was missing parts, which was a miscommunication on my end and he had to spend time researching and buying all new parts. Its not like he did it as charity, I paid him his shop rate for him to do that. He is frustrated because he had unexpected issues to deal with, which I also wasn't aware of. He is tired of hearing me complain and be upset, but how else am I supposed to feel when this has gone to nearly double the hourly time ( I was told ~30 hours originally, and we're at 56 and counting) and the budget is blown out of the water, and we still dont have a completed car, in fact we are several steps back now. I have lost sleep over this because being two states away I have very little control over the progress, I just have to sit and wait... and pay...

Wow. I would have used the m54b30 RA like you wanted in the beginning, but got talked out of. Pretty sure you'd be driving the car right now. Thank god you avoided those "harmonic" issues by going with this setup.
A properly balanced 3.0 assembly would be FINE in that block, peak power occurs at 5900, so why anyone is concerned with anything above that is beyond me, unless its a tracked car. Especially when the real story is the torque advantage, where a street driver will actually benefit. But whatever. You 2.8'd the hell out of it, looks like.
Anyway, I feel pain for you. I really do.
hope you fare much better from here
