The coil packs go with whatever valve cover you end up using. s50 cover with obd1 coil packs, s52 cover with obd2 coil packs.

Got it, so for me obd1 type coils are the way to go then. I just wasn't sure if they are different in any other way other than the way they look or fit.

-The coils are different in the way the harness conects to them, in relation to the valve cover.

I'll just go with m50 coils then and obd1 cover.

yes, you can use an obd2 cover though but you have to do a lil trimming, but some of the creative guys here have done it before.

The long block does not have any covers on it, so I might as well make it simple and go with obd1 cover(s). obd1 coils, and pink injectors ordered.

got a lead on the following as well for $75?

              m50 knock sensors
              m50 cam position sensor
              m50 crank position sensor
              m50 icv
              m50 obd1 valve cover

Nice, so you ordered pink tops already, a buddy of mine has a set he needs to get rid of...

It's great fun @any RPM above about 3300. Below 3300 or so, I'm still dealing with some bogging especially when the engine is cold. I'm hunting for the trouble now - doesn't seem to be the VANOS and it's not throwing codes.

Anyway, aside from my issues, I'd recommend the M52 OBD1 w/ S52 cams combo to anybody - cheaper than an S52 and not much down on power in the higher RPMs - plus it will accept serious boost if I ever want to go FI since it's basically an S52 block with thicker cylinder walls ;)

Jean-see if you can score the bearing ledges with the s52 cams. The bearing ledges not only hold the lifters, but are also the bearings (hence the same) that the cam rides on, and hence wears with, just like the crankshaft bearings do with the crank.

How much are these new? I would probably want to put new ones in when I change the cams...

Took the valve cover off to check the condition. Oil pan will come off in a few days. Dropped the e34 pan for cleaning at a machine shop, along with other misc. parts from the 325i.

Looks pretty clean! Are you going to take the head off and get it rebuilt, or are you going to keep things as-is? I'd block off the intake ports with some duct tape or masking tape so that crap doesn't get into the combustion chamber.

Head is coming off after the oil pan, I don't want to install this and later find out something isn't good and deal with pulling it out again...

The head is attached with 14 main bolts plus few smaller bolts on the chain end. I didn't notice one of the smaller E8 bolts at first and kept wondering why the head doesn't come off .
