Does the oil cooler rely on a thermostat to circulate oil at a given time?

Also, how are you guys mounting the coolers?
Yes, the stock setup uses an oil thermostat so that it only circulates oil to the cooler once it has reached a certain temp.

      Thanks!

So what does one do if they don't go with the factory setup?

I just realized or rather Patrick realized that the E46 housing has the same P/N as the euro housing.

Just wanted to throw that in here.

Anyone ever heard of Fluidyne oil coolers?

I'm looking at their largest one: DB-30130

I'm also waiting for Patrick to get me a quote for the Earl's 25 row oil cooler.

I did buy the IE oil filter cap adapter but have not decided on what cooler I want to run yet.

                Soon!

Bringing this back up, what's the minimum amount of row's an oil cooler for this particular application?

I already purchased an Earl's 25 row oil cooler but I have NO idea where the hell I'm going to mount it. I have no room in front because I have an auxiliary fan...This 10 row would fit just ahead of it though. Any recommendations? I'm going to get my lazy ass to install the oil cooler this summer.

What do you guys think about an M5 E34 oil cooler?
I have the chance to pick one up pretty cheap. It's not beat up or anything.

How beneficial do you guys think an oil cooler is for a N/A motor especially during track use?
Is it wasy to fit an S38 cooler in there and where is the best place to mount it?

Did you ever go with this? Do you think it would be too big or would fit behind the kidney grills?

I'm currently also looking for a plate-style cooler that will be easy to mount up.

Hey, actually I haven't mounted mine yet.

I will most likely go with my Earl's oil cooler though...I have two:

Free Shipping - Earl's Performance Temp-A-Cure Fluid Coolers with qualifying orders of $109. Shop Fluid Coolers at Summit Racing.

Going to mount it soon though, just gotta come up with a bracket and placement. I have an aux fan on the condenser side and putting the oil cooler in front of it might not be too efficient. Might put it somewhere behind the valance.

I'm running the stock e30 oil cooler and just made some custom lines to work with the euro s50 oil filter housing. I really don't understand why you would bother changing the actual cooler for a larger one or an aftermarket one, the stock one is more than adequate for most people, is in a good location, and requires no modification to get it to mount.

As far as how beneficial it is to have a cooler on these motors. I really doubt its a huge benefit on a N/A car. I would not of bothered with a oil cooler if the motor i bought didn't already come with the oil filter housing.

Here is a link that shows what i did to make the stock cooler work with the euro filter housing.
