First off, drive-by-wire IS electronic throttle. Bimmerworld's nomenclature is confusing.

Second off, I would suggest driving an E46 M3 before writing off electronic throttle. It is not as bad as other DBW cars. Moreover, cable throttle conversions have been somewhat problematic. The S54 throttles were not meant to be cable-operated which presents a few issues with the conversion, most notably nonlinear return spring feel (I wouldn't take BW for their word on that). Honestly in this case it seems leaving the e-throttle system in place may be the simplest, most issue-free approach.

why VANOS delete? that's the best part of the S54. :(

the main reason people do VANOS deletes is because their aftermarket computers can't run it.

I have driven the E46 m3 both the SMG and Manual. And I like the feel of the DBW. I will be keeping the original throttle stuff and i may change my mind. And i did drive both M3s in sport mode and standard. But seeing how a lot of people are suggesting the standard throttle set up so i may not go with DBW. On this project i base my decisions on others experiences.

I have been driving cars for almost 7 years. I have raced a few one being a E46 M3. Thats when i fell in love with the S54. I maintain my own car and know all the maintenance that they need. As far as building I have a bit of experience. I should have mentioned this S54 will start out as a Street car but eventually turn into a weekend racer.

As far as a S54 build up this is my first hens all the research into it.

I agree with nando. The best thing about the S54 is the VANOS and its ability to gain huge area under the curve. You can get over 350 whp with regular-lift Schrick cams and a competent tuner.

I don't know what your experience with power levels in an E30 are, but rest assured, having a car that is around 700 lbs lighter than an E46 M3 will make it rip with a stock S54, never mind one with 70 more whp.

That, and you won't be able to put tires wide enough to get traction anyway

Well, with high lift cams I doubt the torque would be increased a huge amount, though the high rpm power would be pretty beastly, so the tires probably won't be overwhelmed as long as you use some judgment. Just don't use crappy all seasons, otherwise you won't be doing the engine any justice.

It'd make for a fun track car, but you won't be able to open wheel race it competitively with any organization, as the engine would class you very high in CCA and NASA GTS.

I don't think you'd want that cam anyway unless you did a high $$$$$$$ build with a stroker crank, sleeved bores, race gas compression and tune, carbon airbox, etc. etc.

basically to do a cam that agressive justice you'd have to dump obscene amounts of money on the engine. it would make a ton of power but it would be expensive, tough to live with, and probably not live all that long.

if you want to put it in a mostly stock motor a standard cam or "street" schrick makes more sense. All that cam will do otherwise is kill your bottom end with little gained up top, plus you have to remove VANOS so the torque curve would be even narrower. that's why it's a race cam. :)
