All depends on what youre going to be using this car for. My IX is a daily and has been a great car in the snow, rain, autox, and what not, but as far as handling it has taken a lot to get where I am today. If you go with an is, you get a very controlable car out the box, plus youll pull a bit on the highway because of our drivetrain loss and extra weight.

I've owned both - still have an IX. I have to say unless you need awd then there isn't much point in getting an IX. If it's your only car and you use it in a winter climate then it's a great car, unique and fun. That being said, as stated above, most everything is a little more challenging and a little more expensive.
I will also say that the only car I've owned that I can't part with is my IX. It has a bit of a cult following.

I like iX's but boy... Just the extra drive line parts are scary as shit when it comes to maintenance. I really want one to rebuild and rally.
iS>iX hands down. When you get in an e30 and experience the awesome handling and the nimbleness of a small rwd car, YOU WILL WANT MORE. but there's not much more to get for an iX. No swap available that's affordable and doesn't take a ton of work. You can boost it but the weak point in the iX is the tcase when it comes to torque. You will need to replace the front half shafts which is a pain and most people end up spending $700.
so bottom line... here :
iX is for a more calm or extremely ingenuitive person. (yes I made a word.)
This is more of the daily that you maintain and keep clean. The cost of maintenance will get you to a swap in an iS in no time. Still a fun car. (don't you dare try to burn out, not possible)
iS> FUN! CHEAP! EASY! It's everything the iX is but better with more simplicity and malleability. (minus the awd) but hey, you can do burnouts without damaging the driveline!
like everyone else says, if you are a first time E30 guy... It's highly recommended to start with an iS. If you can take on the cahllenges and have the heart to put up with the iX, go for it.

How many of you own ix's? How many of you have driven them? How much of what you know is heresay? The ix does understeer,yes. It does not understeer like an fwd car. The awd system's viscous coupling allows up to 99% of the power to be transferred to the rear wheels. It is not a fixed system like Audi's or other cars.
When you take a round about it barely sequels at 45mph on stock suspension, and it does not slide. My friend's car slides and howls in protest. It took a 2nd gear turn on a sandy concrete road flat out with a quick turn of the wheel to get my car to barely slide.
The ix is not the pig that y'all make it out to be, oh and extra maintenance. It is a little extra fluid you have to change occasionally. It isn't like you are changing the fluid in all of them every 3k miles or swapping an engine.
