No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.

Garrick's car is a great example of a time machine. It's listed here as well.

There are different sites that list BMW production numbers and where they went. Out of 35K iX's produced worldwide they imported less than 3K into the US, according to the info I gathered. That would make them more rare here in the US than the M3. We got a good number of M3's here (5K out of 17K)

I'd been looking for an ix for the last two years before I finally pulled the trigger in August, and can add that it was listed for 7k with 130k, front fender rust and only 3 years of records. Earlier in the year 3 ix restorations come out of New Paltz NY on eBay and sold for around 10k.

Barry those numbers seem rather small, but then again not many folks were buying AWD unless it had 4 rings on it or was a Jeep/Eagle product in that time frame. And the Eagle wagon was dead by 89 anyway.

Those are pretty much the numbers that everyone comes up with. No one has found anything much higher or lower than that.

Yeah very small, who knows if it's accurate or not but that's what I found. 318iS was another car that could be considered more rare than the M3, yet I see a bunch of those everywhere. Go figure.

                      those #s are wrong (the 3k ix's).

I dug into it. In Canada they brought 2,000 alone just for rental cars (1988 ).

US imports were about double what the "other" #s say - the reason you see them everywhere, is that's the only #s anyone had, and they just get copied over and over. But they're still wrong.

it was more than that - and worldwide, there were definitely more ix's made than M3s.

also - $11.5k isn't even the most expensive price for an ix that's *sold*. Given the low miles, condition, and the fact that it's a 2-door 5 speed, I bet it will find a willing buyer..

I think it was an '88, all original, like 30,000 miles, looked brand new. What was it, $12,500 or something?

there's a lady who wrote a book about BMW production #s from the beginning to ~2001 or so. She may know how to find out. She doesn't break down NA import #s for the ix though, just total production (25,000 or something).
