the main thing I've seen broken are front differentials. it's a type 168 (small case) but the internals are the smallest of any BMW diff. the E34 and E46 also use a type 168 front diff but they're much stronger inside.

It doesnt matter, nothing from an e46 or E34 will bolt up.Last edited by nando; 08-18-2013, 08:51 PM.

well the theoretical possibility:
if you place small boost it might work with this setup:
85mm overbore + m57d30 crank (90mm stroke), that would make 3063cc
but if you want use good boost, i prefer to stay in 84mm bore. m20 shares cylinder division of 91mm so there wont be much wall to left.
Also if you want to give it huge boost, you'll need to add copper rings or steel gasket.
my friend Matti's ix
transfer case and front shaft stays original exept he bought front shaft spline uppgrade from me.
He has made front differential to last with adding extra gears into it (page 3)
then his front final drive crashed. now he is going to fit Opel omega LSD to front.
he has "I"s LSD on rear.
Also he mentioned that he is trying to add second Universal joint to front drive shaft, so it would soften power transfering to front diff.
typical problem is with the gearbox that when you have too much torque, it will start to bend its axles while accelerating. he has broke 2 gearboxes, both times when using 3rd gear. should make iron shell and stiffer axles

Wow that's pretty intense.
Just had a thought. I don't know too much about transfer cases but, the transfer case in an ix splits the torque 37% to the front diff and 63% to the rear diff. Could you use different sized planetary gears to reduce the amount of torque being sent to the front diff? Allowing for a higher overall torque being supplied by the engine. I believe this would also give you more of an oversteer at the limit of grip. Don't know if this is feasible, just an idea.Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.

If you want to make it rally hard, you should start moving weight from front to rears... Its the heavy 6 cylinder block that weights lot with front diff and transfer case.. My choice would be moving the engine more to back. moving alternator, radiator and all that can be into a trunk.. thats rallycross way..

old w123 wagon
This is one car I have been hanging on to for a while now. Shot back at Gatebil in July, very late at night as the midnight sun approached, it remains one of the most memorable drift cars from the event. Why? Well how can I put it; let’s just say that a lot of …

Over the course of the month we’ve seen some absolutely wicked feature machines rolled out as part of our celebration of Scandinavian car culture. It’s not just the standard of the builds that are impressive, but also the diversity of the cars you find populating the track at Gatebil events and beyond. European, Japanese or …
