I don't know about rare, but there definitely weren't 193,000 ix's produced. the correct number is the 29,589. it's confirmed in an official BMW production number booklet as well as the database file which I've posted about before.

Chris, have you found any information on the first awd e30s? I found a magazine on ebay that I bought that calls for the 323i Allrad. The article was in 4/1984 and shows a layout of the car with supposed spy shots. I just got it in the mail yesterday from Germany and if you notice the battery is still under the hood, rwd style washer reservoir, and it is definitely not an m20b25 drawn. The design is there, and there are no fender flares etc so I am thinking it may be an actual design drawing of the first iX with 150 PS (note in lower left corner).

Any information you can find in your database on this prototype/test mule?

Also 4x4 e30 there was more than that many iX's sent to north america, otherwise I have seen all 3 2 door iX's from 91 that exist in the world!!!

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.

Perhaps that figure represents only those imported to the US?

it's close but no, there were more than that.

neat picture. must have been a concept car? all ix's were basically the same, early/late, although there are some differences. They all had M20B25s, they all used the same drivetrain. there was never an official production of a 323ix. I don't know if the early ones had a trunk mounted battery or not. They had different gearing though, 3.64 for manuals and 3.73 for automatics. the early version also used Motronic 1.0.

Maybe that quote was referring to USA sales only? I know North America sales are higher with Canada in the mix.. I only quoted that post because it seemed the most legit, that number is still BMW's North American customer relations. Not sure why someone would go out of their way to make something like that up. I'll give that number a call tomorrow and see if they can confirm.

No. It's definitely wrong, there's production data to back it up. Mine is definitely not one of 4 91's.

my '86 has the battery in the trunk. obviously a 323ix was never sold, but it would make sense in 1984 to use the m20b23 as the powerplant of the first awd bmw for testing. The additional weight and drivetrain losses would become apparent and warrant more power, but who knows for sure.
