If you climb hills, stick with the 4.10. I lived in WV and constantly climbed hills and felt that the stock M20 2.5 had too little low end power for the AWD system. I had to down shift to 4th on the highway depending on the grade. I can PULL from 80 and accelerate on the same hills in my RWD E30 325i with 3.64 gears.

I agree that 1st gear feels like a 1965 GMC pickup, but the best of both worlds does not apply here.

I have no idea why you have a problem pulling it down to fourth in that situation. That's what 4th gear is FOR.

So 4.10 diffs with 0.81 fifth = 3.32 overall. An iX with 3.64's would have 3.64 overall in 4th, so would have BETTER hill climbing ability than the 4.10 car AND has the option of pulling it up to 5th on flat terrain.

Yea with 4.10s I am already in second gear just driving around the parking lot and it's loud as hell on the highway like 4k rpms at 70mph

edit: yea that was totally wrong

I like the prospect of 3.64 and using 4th on the highway. It would feel just like an M10 318i. Not sure it would have enough power in the hills in 3rd though. Ever been on I70/I68 in Western MD? I can pull all those hills at 90 in my RWD 325i and still accelerate.

I really hate 4th on the highway with 3.91 or even 3.73 for that matter. There are some pretty long steep hills on my routes. I can't even have bikes on my rack on a trip with a stock iX. 500 extra pounds and an AWD system would just love some extra power especially down low!

I think euro 3.73 auto. gears and a stroker would be a good set-up.

For the last time, 70mph is not 4,000 rpm.

Why would you want your car to feel like an M10?

Just get a 2.55, then you could drive on the highway in 2nd gear! :p

I am talking about driving iX's on the freeway with major Appalachian hills. 3.64 gears would allow cruising in 4th or 5th on major hills. Like I said, there is no "best of all worlds" with the stock 168 HP engine.

Early 318i cars often came with 3.64 gears like the Euro 325iX manuals. I was merely stating that the 3.64 gears in a heavier US spec car would feel like an M10 318i.

              RPMs at 70 MPH w/ 24.7 tires

              5th gear with 4.10 - 3,162

              5th gear with 3.91 - 3,016

              5th gear with 3.64 - 2,808

That's interesting. I've never heard of a close ratio iX transmission but you never know. My calculator shows 3904 RPM with 1:1 fifth gear with 4.10 R&P.

                  Anyone heard of a 325iX with a 1:1 5th gear?

                  Maybe the tach is out???

Here is the site I am using:

Crawlpedia's RPM and Engine Speed Calculator will find your engine RPM at any speed given your transmission ratio, ring and pinion gear ratios, and vehicle speed.

                      70Mph is more like 3100rpm. 75 is almost exactly 3500. 4000 is like 85.

All ix 5 speeds have the same ratios.

Looks like we agree 98% (3100/3162) LOL

                        Depends on tire size I use 205 60 15 on my iX - 24.7 diameter. Stock 205 55 15 tires are 23.9" diameter

Dirty325iX - try to use a phone app for speed as the speedos are not accurate on our cars for the most part . I use Spyglass.

no I was just totally off

but just to stir the pot I would have to side with 3162 at 70mph

325iX uses a Getrag 260 with 0.81 fifth, just like the RWD cars.

                              That is correct.

It is possible to build a 260 Getrag with 1:1 5th gear! I don't know what he has?

Maybe Dirtyix is talking about revving 4,000 RPMs at 70 MPH in 4th gear. He should be going about 87 in 5th with 4.10 though.

Speedo or tach may be off.
