are those bolts captive or do they have some sort of hex or torx head?

the bolts are kinda splined and d shaped, they just sit there and were pressed in

            Yeah, definitely snazzy.
That's how I'd envisioned it should be done... interesting to see it actually done.

I got my reman shaft from bavauto a long time ago. it's been good. I think I have about 80,000 miles on it now. so it's probably worn out, lol. But it looks like it can be rebuilt instead of the stock shaft which had sealed u-joints.

                BMA carries the replacement U-joint.
The problem for the first rebuild is that BMW staked the original u-joint in place. You can see notches where 5 or 6 of the 8 original stake points were. The staking has to be machined away and the new snap ring groove cut where the stakes were. Once that's done, the next rebuild is cake.

that would be sweet if it could be done a little cheaper than what bavauto is selling, but I guess after you add up buying a used shaft+ paying someone to machine it+ the 100$ replacement u joint, it would be just as expensive

When compared against *just* replacing the u-joint, it's a lot of money.

Not something most people can DIY, plus it comes clean, balanced and painted.
