speaking from experience, i can say that i have used tons of cleaners over the years. simple green, purple power, kerosine..... the one i mentioned above called "super clean" in the purple bottle is absolutely phenomenal. think night and day. the pressure washer is great, but it won't come close to getting everything. since it is oxide based, the aluminum will be shiny like new when you are finished, but it will oxidize quickly if you don't put something over it for protection. i think it was about 6 or 7 bucks a bottle.yeah I've used that stuff. I haven't really had that great of luck with it, but I don't have a pressure washer. I used a pressure washer when I did my 5 speed without any cleaner and it came out pretty good, so I'm not really sure that purple stuff does a whole lot (other than stain aluminum parts).
I like to use a chlorine based degreaser but it's pretty nasty and then you have a solvent to dispose of. It melts off the grease though.Leave a comment:

I drove it over the winter but Chicago only had a couple of winter storms. The automatic transmission was great. My dad was surprised at it. Now that you mention the excitement with the 4.10s, I can't wait. I don't remember the brand I used but I know it's a parts cleaner. My dad had a 5 gallon drum of the cleaner which a friend of his brought from his job. We always accept freebies. Lol. I'll let you guys know later on today. I'm at work framing walls for a knew AMC Theater.

i can't speak for the op, but:
vatozone and other places sell a degreaser called "super clean" in a purple bottle. i use this stuff with a stiff plastic brush and a gasoline powered pressure washer. my parts look like this or better when i get done. it is an oxide based cleaner that is a bit caustic. you will definitely want to use nitrile gives with it. also, it causes aluminum to corrode quickly after its use. i always spray or wipe a light oil over everything i clean.Leave a comment:

what did you use to clean the transmission?
I don't know if you drove it as an automatic but it's completely different as a manual. especially with the 4.10s :)Leave a comment:

It looks like you are off to a good start. Clean and inspect everything.Leave a comment:

1991 Ix Manual Transmission Swap Pictures
Hey peeps! I am going to share pictures of my manual swap as progress happens. There's enough info on swaps and parts list so I won't go into details. As always, if you see something that would help, let me know. I am still in the infants stages of getting new parts. Here it goes!
