Don't forget GDI, huge difference for how much boost you can slam into it. M52 has the same 10.2:1 CR, but you don't see much more than 400~450whp on stock CR+pump gas.

Most N54s aren't more than 450whp anyway (maybe 5% of them). Plus they are basically ticking time bombs - injectors, coils, waterpumps, wastegates, it never seems to end..

        That's surprising.

I guess the turbo engine is tuned for MOAR TORK.

Or it just didn't matter because they were boosting it so the extra cost of porting it wasn't worth it. The few ported N54 heads I've seen made more power/torque everywhere, so it's not like they were trying to keep up velocity or something. I think the smaller valves are due to the smaller bore & shrouding issues.

m20 + small turbo will offer more BFYB than good 2.8L NA which is what is need for 250hp. its not the way id do it but thats not the question asked....

Also lol at all the contradictions earlier in this thread

For example, the N54 appears to be the "top dawg" of turbo BMW platforms - but seriously, the heads flow about the same as an 885 M20. All it really has going for it is a stout bottom end and lots of aftermarket support - but those guys think that 500whp is the shit (on stock turbos, at 20+ PSI), but people have been doing that on turbo builds (M20, M50, S38, whatever) for ages with way less boost.
              Yes! :D

Also, you'll need a good bit of head work and a fairly aggressive cam to hit 250 hp.
Fairly aggressive CAM being 288? I don't want lose all my low-end power/driveability...still looking for the best of both worlds i suppose
