    Ipod in Car?

I'm thinking about asking for an Ipod for Christmas but would only find it useful if i could "dock" it in my car and attempt to eliminate CD's. I haven't done much research on the topic but i would assume that this would be possible with an aftermarket CD deck that has an AUX input, am I right? I'm also assuming there is a cable to charge it using the cig lighter.

This question is mostly aimed toward the Apple guy(s) (Kris...). Also snowboarding with an Ipod would be kick ass.

You have a couple of options, the easiest would be to get an iTrip for the iPod that simply broadcasts your iPod over FM radio (has to be close to the antenna). Another option is to get an aftermarket radio that has aux input and the final option is to get an Alpine radio and the AI iPod interface so you can actually control the iPod with the radio.

FM transmitter is out of the question due to the poor sound quality...

How much do these decks cost? Got any links? That sounds cool

Just got done researching a bit, it's super cool but i'd have to buy a new deck along with the Ipod receiver...we'll see if i can get hooked up with a buddy at Circuit City to make things a bit cheaper...

Getting an aftermarket deck with an aux input would be your best bet. Unless you want the spaceship looking alpine.

Or you can get the frequency add-on for the ipod, don't really think it would be that crisp. My friend has it in his 4-runner and I prefer better quality music then radio.

You are talking about eliminating CD's by using a MP3 player.... a FM transmitter is the least of your issues when it comes to sound quality.

Sound quality on mp3's are usually close enough to a CD that you can't tell in an e30, unless you have tons of extra sound deadening. Just make sure the mp3's are ripped above 128k.

Ken - I like the look of my alpine and the features it comes with, but to each his own. You could certainly get a cheaper player if you only want to use the Aux input.

My Kenwood KDC-X869 has an aux input that I connected an RCA to miniplug to then my ipod, NET MD minidisk player and anything else I want to. it sounds fine but since I got Sirius I have not listened to anything else!

                      Thanks Stereoinstaller1 for the hookup!

Most of my CD's are ripped at 192k, so the mp3's arn't bad at all. Although the mp3 will theoretically sound worse than a CD, I won't notice a difference in my car at all and my main reason if I do this is to eliminate CD's, not get the best sound quality.

Im getting an Ipod for Christmas as well and so here is my plan:

                          - Get the "storage tray" by replacing the ashtray in the front - BMW P/N # 72-60-1-942-786
                          - wire the dock into the storage tray. Make it all nice. I'll probably make a nice flush dock using fiberglass.

                          Done.

No wires showing, it should look pretty nice. :D

                            You guys are on crack....

                            95% of my 2500+ MP3 collection are 320kbit rips.

I won't download anything lesser unless 320 just plain doesnt exist.

I cannot listen to 320kbit MP3's in my car. They sound horrible.

Anyone that thinks any bitrate MP3 compares to CD quality is ignorant. If you say "well I can't hear any difference" its because you aren't listening, and most likely do not have a good system.
