Is there going to be a carpeted pretty panel to cover the whole space? Now that I see this picture, I'm thinking maybe I can mount my amp next to the sub box on the back wall of the trunk and then hide everything behind a carpeted panel for a stealth set-up.

            That's what she said.

Looks great Luke. I wouldn't mind seeing this jig you were talking about either.

Jig is cool. So man, you can really see how that ski pass is offset in last picture, lol. Assuming woofer hole is lined up with it.

These are tuned nice and low it looks like! 32hz Im gonna guess

Bernzie, post a pic of your strut bar, in your style of photography, I know we will be able to tell, you take terrific pics.

These boxes will be fully upholstered. No pretty panel will be required, but could be added.

There will be a matching "amp rack" available, should have pics of the whole thing all upholstered and an amp installed in the next day or so. The amp rack will be 2" "shallower" than the box, but pretty flimsy...plenty to hold an amp through anything but a huge collision though.

The amp rack will also be upholstered.

So, about this "Type J UltraJig" miter sled...Justin B and my son Nigel were hanging out at the shop, where I had been working on designing a new sliding jig, as the old one that has built well over 300 E30 and E34 boxes just will not work, and it is wearing out too.

One of the biggest challenges of this small-scale mass production is repeatability of cuts.

With the old jig, I could get generally within 1/8" of perfect every time. That is WAY too sloppy for my tastes, but MDF is very flexible adn the panels need to be pre-cut before they come to the shop. I cannot manage full sheets, so I get them rough-cut. My tablesaw has tolerances well under 1/32", so the cuts I make are pretty accurate...but if the wood is cut like crap from Lowes or Home Depot, the center of the sheet is going to be a trapeziod at best...so that is most of the 1/8" tolerance I have been putting up with.

1/8" may not sound like much, but that is 1/8" in a 15" cut...pretty crappy for a picky bastard like me.

So Justin came up with this idea, and tossed my idea completely out the window. What I built took me 3 full days of fiddling and thinking, but it is easy to use, makes hundreds of identical cuts, well under my 1/32" goal...just awesome.

This little video here shows my 20 year old son doing his 2nd ever cut on a tablesaw. The part he was cutting came up a little off the jig, but he was able to back out and fix it. The panel he cut is identical to all the others we cut, a total of 14 cuts...all perfect enough. It was very hard to tell that these were not machined.

So how does one set the sled up for another cut?

The depth is adjustable, but this discussion is about people interested in buying an 8" subwoofer box...

So I just spent a little time listening to it. It is not yet fully sealed into the cabin, so some sloppiness is to be expected, but damn, this is a great sounding little sub.

Just to check the bottom end on bigger boom, I listened to a little Chali 2na. This thing does do big bass pretty well...but if you have a consistent diet of rap or big bass stuff, you really want to look at a 10 or a 12.

Rock or other normal-ish musics are very well reproduced. Kick drum is solid and tight, deep bass stuff nice and clean. The thing is a joy to listen to.

More pics tomorrow. These should be ready to ship by weeks end, so get your PayPal ready.

                          Luke

I am sure interested to see how the 500/5 is going to work with this set up...that box is SMALL. I had the 500/5 mounted up top on the rear shelf in my e46...would this be the better route rather than using the amp rack option?

Edit: Just looked at the rear shelf, I am thinking that would be a no...
