DIY: One Touch 3 Blink Turn Signal (no harness cutting)

One of my favorite features of modern cars is the one touch lane change turn signals, and after years of driving in LA (I'm currently in TN for work) I got used to it for snappy lane changes.

So I went on a search to add it to my 89 325i that I daily. Couldn't find a diy so I took some pictures along the way.

The main thing I wanted to do was wire it only into the switch so I could remove it by only replacing the turn signal switch, no actual harness cutting.

I bought this module from eBay Germany.

Then I removed the steering wheel and turn signal lever.

I used their instructions and the etc, made this wiring chart :

    -------------------------E30---------------------------------------Komfortblinker
    +12v-----------------Green/Violet-------------------------Red
    GND------------------Brown----------------------------------Black
    Left Input----------Blue/Red from Relay-----------Orange / Black
    Left Output-------Blue/Red to connector--------Orange
    Right Input--------Blue/Black From Relay--------Yellow / Black
    Right Output-----Blue/Black to connector------Yellow

You have to cut the relay output signals to put the one touch relay in line, which is why I wanted to do all the wiring on something replaceable. The +12v and GND are just splices.

There's also not much space under the steering column cover so I put the splices near the connector to put it closer to the pedals.

(ignore the green/yellow splice, I cut the wrong one and had to rejoin it)

I soldered on all the wires trying to keep them neat and tidy.

After this I added a zip tie by the splices for strain relief.

After that, I just plugged the connector back in the car and put everything back together, and it worked perfectly the first time.

Here's a video from before I put the steering wheel back on.

I think I got the module cheaper, more like 40 euros, but for that much plus some solder and flux and about an hour, it works great.

Hope someone else finds this interesting.

it wasn't until after driving the E90 for 2 years, that I realized that the E30 turn signal stalk was meant to be used like this. The only difference is you have to hold it down for the 3 blinks, instead of it doing it for you automatically.

nice find on that module, I was going to make one myself that could plug into the harness. Maybe I still will if I can do it for less than 70 euro...

I knew I paid more like $30 for mine. Here's a better link, I think maybe this seller didn't have them available before. Searching 'komfortblinker bmw' on ebay Germany came up with this for 21 euros.

I wonder when (only) three blink flashers can be used. Safely. Shouldn't the flashers be used ahead of time to let other cars know your intention and perhaps slow down a bit, and not just when you initiated your turn-in? Three blinks ain't much more than 3 seconds. ;-)
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

All stock bmws have the 3 blink feature. I don't think safety is an issue.
