Also if you already have expensive tuned chip in your DME ecu. With the eprom programmer/reader, you can read that chip, save the file, it will be in 32kb size on our cars 88-91, then you burn that file into one of the new flash chips, and you put that new flash chip in your ecu, and you sell the expensive tune chip. So basicly chip tuning hardware becomes free. Then you make your own chip tune. No need to spend money on expensive tunes, they are not that good anyway.

If you don't have 173 ecu don't worry. You can use 173 tune in any of the ecus ending in 380, 525, 524, digits.

No, what you are suggesting is breaking the law, and being a major asshole to boot. No one here likes thieves.

When you sell the chip, you actually sell your rights to use the software too. Imagine that.

Yes, you only need a $175 eprom emulator to tune in real time. You can see what part of the map ecu is watching then you change values and you can see a reaction in real time.

You can do all the good stuff with investing only $60 but you will have to tune, remove, reflash, retune, reflash, install.

One day on the dyno, how much does the tuner invest? $200 total? Then goes and sells chips for 10 years for $200 each. I already developed the software and I am doing it for free. I invested lots of my time to give it for free to community, why can't you do the same? Why does MarkD only wants to make money on community, why doesn't he share something for free, like I am doing?

You hate me now because I want to help BMW community
$200 to tune the entire ECU? huh? I spent over $300 and that was just the WOT ignition curve. Please let me know where you have a dyno that is that cheap..

we hate you because you're a pathetic fucking moron. I thought I made myself pretty clear after I unbanned you, yet here you are. You're back to making baseless claims and lies.

if anyone wants to use tunerpro/ostritch, they can just as easily go to those sites and figure it out for themselves. they don't need your bullshit.

Then why did you suggest (in a post that was here from Feb 23 but deleted yesterday) that Marsuper should buy a programmer and a few chips and you would email MY file to him?

Not everyone has the time to tune the ECU's like that, they want to drive their cars. Or they realise that they also need a wideband AFR logger (and not cheap LC-1). You need someting like an Innovate LM-2 that logs AFR and rpm at the least, and that is $400 or so. Did you forget about that?

When I got started working on Motronic DME's in 1987 or so (what were you doing then? ) I bought the tools such as the XDASM dissasembler and also bought a RACELOGIC emulator for over $4000 in 1999. I have spent over $10000 in tools to tune OBD-1 cars. Just one of my emulators and software costs over $10K. (DIMSPORT RACE 2000) Why don't you ask Bill Gates or Steve Jobs why they don't just give all the products away for the next 10 years?

You don't want to help. And how many tools do you actually pay for? I bet you use a pirate copy of IDA Pro like all the other ECU hackers, correct?

Why is everyone hating on this guy so much? All he's doing is sharing information.

Yes, a specialist can tune better than an amateur, and that IS worth a premium but that doesn't mean that the information in a tune - especially for 20+ year old cars - is some kind of top secret information that the world should never see.

Whether you're talking about pharmaceuticals, software or ways of doing business, things eventually go "generic" after the creator(s) have had some time to recoup their development costs and make some profit. You're only as good as you last idea, and our system is set up to support that. I think MarkD is the perfect example. He's got tunes available that are arguably great for the E30, but he's not a one trick pony.

I understand the counterargument of protecting your intellectual creations, but this issue has sort of already been "decided" outside of this discussion. There are some of us that want to start experimenting with tuning and the cost to get in to it is cheaper than it ever has been before. I got a 173 off eBay for $15. The cost to pull up and toss your car on the dyno is getting cheaper too ($50 for four runs here in SD - Link). If I'm willing to take the risks associated with DIY tuning, why is it bad to learn from what others have done?

He can do what he wants if he just wants to give away definitions that tell you where the maps are. But he actually made a post on Feb 23, where he offered to email an image of one of my files to someone and said that is cheaper. He's also posted in some forums that :

                                1) I am ripping people off

(not sure how since Dinan and Turner charge even more for their products)

                                2) That I don't know what I am doing since he can't find certain things that he figured out how to do in MY files, and also that I re-calculate the checksums when it is not required. Just that last bit shows that he is out to lunch.
