It depends which engine harness you are using.
For my swap, I used the fusebox connector from a late e30. On the late c101 connector (fuse box side) the CEL wire is brown w/ black stripe (pin 12).
I extended this wire all the way to my instrument cluster to an unused light bulb slot.
The brown black wire supplies the ground to the bulb, and then you need switched 12v for the other side of the bulb.

Edit: I don't have an eta cluster in front of me, but if you want to get fancy you can cut out the transparent plastic CEL overlay from a 325i cluster and fit it into the eta. so that the bulb illuminates an actual CEL indicator.

Little up date. new head is on, harness is in and bam! no start. Ive ready i have to run wires off that 3 wire plug by the DME. Everything lights up fine icv you can hear buzzing but no cranking or fuel pump. Also not sure how to wire the starter. Im leaving the eta starter but using a 89 harness. The I harness has 3 wires by the starter....

will a e34 m50 o2 sensor work with the eta exhaust?. am i better off just adding a wire to the I o2 sesor and use the eta's 3 wire just for length?

you can't "add" a wire to a 3 wire sensor. use the correct sensor for your engine - that means a 4-wire sensor (M50 is the same sensor)

Sounds like it's more than just the o2 sensor not being hooked up correctly. How are you figuring out your wiring? It was a pain for my swap as well.

Sorry if I made it sound wrong. I mean cut and hack the old harness . splice the I o2 to that harness and add that one wire. That way its just like im making it longer by addind wire.. Ill still be using the late model connector.

Everything runs right. I just havnt install the o2 sensor yet.

Buy the RIGHT o2 sensor with the right plug. A hacked/extended o2 sensor is pretty half-ass. I believe the E34 M20 sensor has a longer wire and may work for you.

yeah the m50 o2 should work also. im in the search.

I don't get what you're saying. if you're using a B25 harness and electronics, you don't need to splice anything. the extra wire is for the heater ground. what are you doing exactly? you can't use an eta harness with B25 electronics, and you can't use a 4 wire O2 sensor with a 3 wire system either.

but yes, an M50 O2 sensor will work with B25 electronics. it even has the same pinout.

haha, not that im going to do this but.. i was talking about Taking the old o2 sensor out. Because Im using the Eta's exhaust piping the o2 bung sits back next to the o2 sensor. My plan was to cut off the old o2 / plug and use the wiring just to make up the slack that the b25's sensor isnt long enough. Anyways im going to find a m50 sensor and call it aday.
