All about my heavily modified m20 head.

Everyone seems to be interested as I'm constantly asked about what I'm doing with it and for pictures etc.

I haven't really showed much of it till now.

    What I've done:

Intake ports enlarged slightly to gasket size.
    Intake ports heavily ported.
    Intake valve guides reduced/smoothed.
Intake bowls heavily worked and smoothed.
    Intake valve guide transition knifed.

Exhaust ports greatly enlarged to match gasket size.
    Exhaust ports heavily ported.
    Exhaust valve guides reduced/smoothed.
Exhaust bowls heavily worked and smoothed.

    Combustion chambers recontoured/detextured.
    Combustion chamber flycut smooth transitioned.
    Combustion chamber removed valve shrouding.

Whats still left to be done:

Combustion chambers polished to a mirror finish.
    Exhaust ports minor touchups.
    3 angle valve grind.
    Resurface sealing surface of head.
    Assemble and install!

I will be installing this with my ceramic coated headers, catless midpipes, and with a oil seperation system to keep oily crankcase vapors from entering the intake. I will be installing my rocker arms, rocker shafts, and cam from my current head into this one. Valves, springs, retainers, keepers, etc will be OEM.

Wow that head should breathe really well especially in conjunction with the headers and your already extrude honed intake.

do you have any pictures of the combustion chamber from the top? I'm interested in the deshrouding.

also, did you polish the intake ports? I was under the impression that it was a bad idea to do so.

Thanks. I am doing all the work to this head myself with the exception of the resurfacing, and 3 angle valve grind.

I do not have any direct overhead closeup shots of the chambers. I will get them tomorrow though when I finish with my end of the work on the head.

The intake ports are polished very lightly. The light polishing helps to keep them carbon free. What is important is that the intake port surface not be too smooth. The porting scratches/grooves were left behind to lend a mixing effect to the air.

Awesome, all the more satisfying when the job is done and you know you did a great job by yourself, and i know if you had a valve/seat grinder you'd do that yourself too :P

Ps, i'm hoping to see some nice numbers come from this head.

Nando, snapped a quick pic for you. Its rather dark, but you'll get the idea.

Also, here is a stock 885 chamber to compare:

I wanted to ask you what you used to get behind the valve guide, but you just ground it off. are you replacing the guides anyway, or is that for smoother flow? I ground mine down a little bit (it's pretty much unavoidable) but getting behind the guides was tricky without wiping them out. I also didn't want to grind off stuff that I really didn't understand all that well (you can take more off but you can't put any back!). :)

                  The guides are all new.

They are smoothed to the valve pocket for increased flow.

that looks like a really nice job Jordan, have you done any headwork prior to this?

do you know how much volume you removed from the combustion chambers?
