The kit comes with long shenks to attach the cartridge rolls to etc, normal diegrinder is just fine.
All about my heavily modified m20 head.

Looking good
Jordan
The new head looks terrific. Props.
Questions:
1) What headers are those and are they Jet hot coated.
2) Did you port match the intake manifold?
3) thoughts on stainless Plus 1 valves, and high performance valve springs..
are these bling or are they required for a rebuild.79 323iComment

2) Yes, both the manifold and head intake ports were enlarged beyond the stock gasket size. Gaskets were also englarged to match
3) No real gains to be had there.Tenured Automotive Service Professional - Avid BMW Enthusiast

Dyno! Dyno! Dyno!
As time went on, the factory developed the car each year, making it faster, more comfortable, and capable of handling at higher speeds.
You don’t want this. You want the trickiest, most dangerous, oldest model you can find. Only then can you prove to the world that you’re a man.Comment

It cost me $40 to fully port/polish the head.
$300 or so for the 5 angle valve grind, recon valves, new guides, and resurfacing.
I had all the internals from my current head and just swapped them.Tenured Automotive Service Professional - Avid BMW Enthusiast

Originally posted by JordanNando, snapped a quick pic for you. Its rather dark, but you'll get the idea.
Also, here is a stock 885 chamber to compare:

just out of curiousity, what do you actually expect to seal this with RTV?

What exactly is your point, other then ignorantly trying to stir up shit?
There is no problem in the picture at all. What you are seeing is where the polishing wheel rode up over the edge of the chamber. All of the chamber is well within the sealing surface of the edge of the headgasket.
Its been sealed quite well for over a month now and the engine runs much stronger then it ever has.
That picture is also before I had the machine shop resurface the sealing surface of the head. Only an idiot would carry out such machine work prior to doing such extensive porting and modification to the head.Tenured Automotive Service Professional - Avid BMW Enthusiast

The black smoke coming out of your exhaust IS unburned fuel. By smoothing everything out like you did has taken the ability for the fuel and air to atomize effieciently. I will bet that you have raw fuel running down the inside of the intake ports and not being burned properly in the head. Also, I say you'll be chaging that head gasketout soon enough due to the nicks around the combustion chambers.
I build 400 - 700 horsepower NA small block chevys and know what works and what is worthless. You have some nice stuff but its redundant on an M20. A 5 angle valve job is no better than a 3 angle valve job in these motors. I have been tweaking on a few of my own M20's since I bought my cabrio new back in 1987.'87 325ic, powered by S50.Comment

There isn't a single picture showed in this thread of the finished texture on the intake ports so stop talking like you know what they look like. The plain and simple of it is you don't. All the pictures I have posted here also look very polished when in fact the surface is satin at best.
