89 M20B25 Rear Seal Gasket

This is the gasket for the housing that holds the rear crank seal. It looks like it's aluminum or steel. Do I just put it in or does it need some kind of sealant both sides too? If so what should I use?

Bentley says put some silicone down near the oil pan gasket but nothing about the rest of the gasket. I think this gasket was different when Bentley was written? I think it used to be a cork or paper kinda thing before.

I don't want to do this twice.

As far as i've seen, the original one was paper. This new one will get crushed when tightened so no sealant is needed. Also, if your rear main seal is good/replaced, it shouldn't leak anyway. Make sure your surfaces are clean. just my 0.02, I could be wrong but thats what we did on my buddy's car.

i use that metal one w/o issue. i red RTV both sides and it works great.

I think the black coating acts as a sealer, but I chickened out and used a little motorcycle case sealer on both sides. I don't want to have to pull the trans to get in there again.

Just did one for my new beater and Myster-E did a light coat of silicone on both sides.

bumping an old thread here..

I have a metal style RMS gasket. Should I follow the bentley torque figures or just tighten it until it feels good? The Bentley figures seem light for what appears to be a crush gasket

the bentley seem to be spec'd had they been 8.8 grade (still puts about 6 tonnnes of total preload). if they are 10.9 a little more is fine 13Nm M6 and 32Nm M8

id use the non hardening gasket cement from loctite / permatex. Silicone is evil except in a nice set of fakies

x2. The only place where I'd use a silicone type sealer on this engine: very small amount around edges of rocker shaft rubber plugs and corners. And it better be the top shelf stuff - Hondabond or Yamabond, these sealants don't flake off.
