    M20 Noob Question

Sorry if this has been asked and answered before, but I searched and really couldn't find a straight answer for all of my questions.

So basically my question is there any difference between the:
    M20 from a 325i
    M20 from a 325ic
    M20 from a 325is
    M20 from a 325ix
    M20 from a 325e
    M20 from a 325es

I know the M20 in the 325e is a 2.7 liter, but is there any other difference and I've hear the term short-block and long-block thrown around, but I was just curious whats different between them. I'm looking to replace the engine in my 325ix and I know its different, but I think thats just the oil pan.

      good intro

So what exactly are the differences between a 325e and 325i? Why do some models have an “s”, like a 318is, 325es, and 325is? Is the ’84-’85 318i the same as the ’91 31…

Put a 325ix motor back in end of story. Btw the block is Ix specific, not just the oil pan.

Thanks for the links and info guys that pretty much answers anything I had to ask. Also I would like to just put another ix engine in. I'm just gathering all my info before I make a decision or start the project.

Nothing is wrong with it, my plan was to pull the motor and build a stroker motor then put it back in, but have a cheap M20 to just stuff in so I could keep driving the car while I built the stroker.

Short block - engine block and head, nothing else.

Long block - engine block, head and all the acc...power steering pump alternator, etc...

If I were you I would research and learn a lot more than you know right now. Rebuilding an engine isn't a simple DIY.

Short block usually refers to just the bottom end assembly(block and rotating assembly) and long block usually refers to the short block plus the head/heads. A complete motor will come as expected with intake and accessories ect.

The main bearings are different actually. http://www.iemotorsport.com/bmw/E30-...m20mnbrng.html

I'm definitely going to do a lot more research before I even attempt at buying parts. Also I'm planning on doing this further down the road. Probably in two years or something.

Also thanks for clearing everything up guys.

Pretty much with an ix you are gonna have to get quite a few parts from other ix's since they have so many awd specific parts. Also expect those ix specific parts to cost more and be harder to find that the non ix versions.
