Is there a specific reason not to use modern synthetics (aside from low ZDDP content)?

I've been using Mobil 1 5w-50 on my M40 engine for some time now without any issues. I also tried GTX 20w-50 way back, but I felt it made the engine feel sluggish. My car runs in a very hot climate btw (Malaysia).

I dont mind a few drips of synthetic when I can run it 8-10k miles. I run Mobil1 10W-40 High Milage with a good filter. Add 1 quart when it needs it (3-5k miles) and then change it when it needs another. I buy oil at wally world. Right now its $22.47 for 5 quarts. Filter is $5ish. So you get a great oil change for $30. At my temps in Colorado this is just about the perfect year round oil.

oils are a compromise as to what temp and operating conditions they provide their best protection. Since most wear is upon start up and warmup an oil that flows a bit better when at low temp is surely helpful at keeping all the bits apart.

there is no correlation between low ZDDP and synthetic.......

everyone should read through all the chapters here

apparently for a given viscosity say 10W-40 the syntheitc will flow better when cold than the mineral 10W-40

Just switched to Castrol GTX 20W-50 from Mobile One 10W-40 High Mileage Synthetic.

The problem w this is that the filter is not good for 8000 miles

Moly 5w-40 in the wife's car, but it's an audi. :|

                        M1 15w50.

I might standardize on the M1 V-Twin 20w50, since that's what the 993TT is happiest with (according to oil testing and quantities of oil blowing out the turbochargers). Probably not, though. V-Twin (which has lots of the right additives, and was designed to not fall apart in air cooled engines) is quite expensive. 15w50 is available in jugs at Walmart.

Because my E30 sees a fair bit of track time, I run 20w-50 GTX, and change it before each event. I go easy on her when she's cold, and flog every last mile out of her on track :)

read the owner's manual it tells you what oil to run based on the temp. and unless it's winter and below freezing. 20-50 is the best. and 5-30 is never to be used. there are many dyno runs to show that 20-50 non-synthetic is the best for your M20

It does when these supra's run 700-1100HP DD/track and use the stuff with great benefits with wear, adequate oil pressure, and superb lubrication.

So yes.. to DD any 700HP car reliably would be the epitome of reliability.

the point that you missed is that supra engines run at different temperatures, have different tolerances, different lifters, chain driven(not belt) and are turbo'ed. All of these are factors in to which you must account for when getting the correct oil for the job. that's like saying because my oil works in my Civic it will work in my Porsche... - completely wrong conclusion.
