even the stock b25 manifold has all runners feeding from the same source so there is alot of cross talking between cylinders.

any cam that has decent overlap creating reversion you'd want a standalone system to get full control over the idle fuel, timing and any PWM system. a good set of stainless headers amplifies sound to

A big lumpy cam with no proper headwork will not make any more power then it did before, maybe a little but its not worth the money just for a good sounding idle, pull the head and get a port and do heavier valve springs with new valve guides and seats, then you can run as big of a cam as you want and it will actually make power!

Is back cutting the valves a good idea?

There is one sitting at my buddies house in Roswell right now. For sale.

You forgot the most important aspect, more compression, a lot more.

adding an adjustable cam gear, and retarding the timing add to a lower idle, correct?

retarding the timing will lose low end torque, and with a stock motor, not gain a lot in the top end.

changing cam timing won't change the idle speed anyway.

I would stick to a 272, even a 284/272 is a little too much for the stock engine, partially because the CR isn't high enough, and also because of likely piston/valve interference issues with the intake valves.

Are new valve springs, heavier beehive etc, nessciary or really recommended when switching to a 272?

new stock springs work fine for a schrick 272 or 284/272.

with a 288, you definitely need different springs.

I would not use stock, 20+ year old, 200,000 mile springs with an upgraded cam.

that depends on if it's a regrind or not.
