      It's not a heat thing, it's a vibes thing.
      The flywheel dampens the back of the crank, but that leaves the nose floating-
      so the front dampener acts as an 'anti resonator' to prevent the nose from building
      up vibration and shaking itself apart. The rubber ring lets it move some- but then 'catches'
      it at the right phase of its oscillation to prevent it from breaking the crank.
      It's a big deal on big block v8's, too...

        anything under the bonnet sees alot of heat especially between the engine and radiator.

        rubbers dont like heat they fatigue a fair bit easier.

        all rubber parts that see stress have a finite life, the heat lowers this, it is just the way it is

          Update: got a balancer from Banchwerks in Ri's Tim. great guy. gave it to me for free! car started right up and I even drove it for the first time. here's hoping it doesn't decide t comeapart when I do timing belts in the future! Cheers guys
