I've been using RotellaT 15w-40 in my turbo M30 with great results. Granted running E85 burns cleaner than regular gas which keeps the oil cleaner (doesn't get black)

10w30 dino year round if i can help it... Felt lazy at the beginning of winter and took it to an indie for a change, I'm worth it right? guy puts in 5w30 synthetic and i'm seeing a little seepage around the head gasket. granted PO of the engine put in a VR gasket but still. I'll be fixing that hopefully in the summer when school's out.


Also, I've heard bad things about tossing rotella in a regular gas engine.... interested to hear more about this myself.

Diesel oil generally has more zinc additive, which is good for good old engines like M20.

Mike - 5W30 synthetic is too thin for these engine. You are seeing leakage because the new oil has a lot more detergent; thus, it cleans the engine too well and now your engine is leaking. I have used Rotella for years without any bad experience.

well just did me some readin.

apparently, Rotella T5 and T6 is safe for pretty much any car made before 2001... I would have thought that the higher detergent level would be too much for engines like ours, but I stand corrected. Once I go through the Ace and Valvoline I have stocked up, I might switch over. I mean that stuff is cheaper too! Anyone else use diesel oil in their engines? I'm still a little hesitant, but the higher levels of ZDDP makes me wonder why this hasn't been a RECOMMENDED switch by car companies. like in general. hmm.

any more info on this topic?

Thanks for the info dude! I'll be putting in a higher weight soon. maybe even T6. Hey maybe it needed a good deep cleaning anyway right?

looks like Shell has the 15w40 in t5 now - syn-blend, instead of just the white-bottle conventional. wonder how is stacks up (zinc content?)

That's because it sheers down to 20w like nothing.

I've been using diesel oil for a while now. I tried everything from regular GTX 20w/50 to vr1 and then to various brands of diesel oil. Diesel oil ran best and kept the valves quiet and held up in 110 degree ambient temps.
Here's why you should use it
1 It's cheap
2 They are "high mileage" oil basically what you find regular HM oils besides the seal conditioner additives, those additives are sketchy.
3 has a shit ton of ZDDP which flat tappets love and a bunch of other good stuff
4 it stays 15w-40 and doesn't sheer
5 MKIV supra guys use it in their built motors
6 they last past 5k and stay good up till 10k, semi truck drivers don't change their oil they just top it off most of the time and their motors last 500k+ if you forgot to change your oil your good
7 it won't harm your engine, it won't foam up from all the detergents it won't blow up etc. I've dragged my stock seta with diesel oil past 5k and a few mountain passes and nothing
8 Did I say It's cheap
9 In my experience it doesn't burn as much as regular oil. I've had good luck with Delvac its been 2k and hasn't moved a bit.
10 You can strip your paint down to bare metal and use the used diesel oil you just drained and rub it all over your car for that fuuhraze rusted look ;)
