Was Expecting to Just Fix Blown Head Gasket but ..

Thought my problem was just a blown head gasket, but found a little more than that. Classic example of continuing to drive after over heating. Over cooked engines have a unique smell once you open them up, never smelled anything like this on a car before.

Oh well, that's what I get for buying a non-running $800 car site unseen. Now need to decide if this will be a parts car or not. Definitely can make my money back selling parts but the body's in great shape so will probably spend some time trying to find a running engine before parting.

Wow i don't think ive ever seen one that bad. I hope the rest of the car was in good shape to justify the cost.

Yes, the car is overall in good shape and I could definitely get all my money back plus some parting it out, but it's time consuming and I'm not sure what I'm going to do at this point. Going to pull the block out tomorrow and push it in the corner for now.

Why part? Buy new m20 for cheap, replace those gaskets and voila...you're only 2-300 deeper with a running car.

If you know someone that has a running m20 for $200 to $300, point me in the their direction. They don't seem to be as easy to find as they used to and not for that price.

I've heard of these $200-300 M20s, but have never seen one. Seems like $500 is still the going price for a complete M20, which is what I paid at a junkyard. I've saw a few for $400 when I was looking, but nothing local.

Even at $500 though, I'd still fix it if the rest of the car is in good shape. $1500 or less for a decent E30 isn't a bad deal these days.

Today I bought a 1988 325 with a running super eta engine for $650 so I will be using the bottom end from this car to build a 2.7I engine to put back in the 325is.

An 88 super eta is already a 2.7i. Pretty sweet score for 650$. Post pics of the cars already.

Yeah, the car is kind of a piece of crap but it has the super eta motor. I know it's a 2.7 motor but I'm going to do the full i top end swap with the head, intake, etc off a 325i. Extra bonus is that the 325 is a manual and the 325is I'm putting the motor in is an auto so I'll be doing the auto manual swap also.

Just kind of lucked into this deal. A friend of mine that is a Porsche mechanic and usually works on a lot of high end cars got it from someone that owed him money and he's not into bmw's at all and just wanted to get rid of it. I'll sell off the rest of the parts later once I get what I need and use that to help fund all of this.

If its a 1988 Super eta it already is a "2.7i". It already has a 2.5 top end from the factory. That's why they called it the "super eta".

                              GL with the manual swap.
