Intake AFM horn- don't touch it!!!

After looking into an issue I've had since owning the car, whenever I was at idle and blimp the throttle with my hand- I always had a short hesitation before it started to rev up. Checked all vac leaks, every fitting and what not over the years. It always had this and I figured it was just how the M20 is.

I recently was overhauling my intake and noticed that reading a few threads that there is an AFM intake horn in the airbox. Being that I never had one or it was removed by a previous owner I figured it wasn't a big deal. I found one in a junked m20 and installed it- damn the hesitation completely stopped! It apparently helps with Throttle flutter and gives the AFM a steady constant stream of air intake.

Do yourself a favor, if you don't have one installed- find one. If you have one and want to delete it...don't.

We tested it on the dyno. Minus 4hp at the wheels. About what you gain with a generic chip.

It just gets louder. This is why I don't trust butt-dynos. ;)

would be better with a shorter horn that isn't so close to the front wall. however removing it altogether leads to a sharp edge on the entry and bugger all distance for the flow to be straightened before hitting the barn door so its not surprising that it doesn't help

No, it doesn't. Specially if the MAF is hacked onto the stock ECU.

                    Yep.

I've had an awful cold start idle since the MAF swap and killed a couple of genuine Bosch MAF sensors in ~6 months.

There's nothing wrong with the stock ECU and functioning/fresh components. We put these cars through rigorous endurance races and are always amazed at how reliable the stock parts really are - even being 20-30yrs old :)

no problems with my MAF either. If you are killing them I would be suggesting you look at how healthy your motor is. Aside from doing something stupid like trying to clean it, usually the other thing that kills them is if you have a lot of blow by and end up with plenty of oil vapour in your intake.
Just a little project im working on
