It's worth pointing out that the biggest reason to immediately drain the 10W-30 and put in something like Mobil 1 15W-50 is older engines like this one need zinc and phosphorus in the oil to help them live. In this country, 10W-30 is mandated to contain less of these things than almost any other weight oil. Many companies don't advertise their ZDDP (zinc/phosphorous) contents, but Mobil does. 15W-50 is what you want.

i agree, about the OP engine its been mentioned by others before us but lack of zinc would be his least concern haha.
in general in a very very cold climate id be tempted to try 10W-30 to see the sorts of temps and pressures i got, the engine might prefer it.
i'm not sure how proven oil tests are. mostly its just peoples opinions e.g. i ran the oil and the engine runs fine or my mechanic said this oil is best....the recommendations in the manual are old and oils are much better and advanced than they were in the 80's so nobody knows for sure.
mobil did the million mile test but if you read between the lines you might wonder why they got a million miles but most engines in real world dont get close to half that and what that means for a oil.89 E30 325is Lachs Silber - currently M20B31, M20B33 in the works, stroked to the hilt...

Isn't OC warm? I'm not too familiar with California but I thought it was more southern...Interested in vintage cars? Ever thought about racing one? Info, photos, videos, and more can be found at www.michaelsvintageracing.com!

i use 10W-40 in winter (2C-25C ambient) and 10W-50 when its warmer. when the engine first kicks to life you can tell the difference in viscosity, the engine is much happier. depite them both being 10W there is a big difference when above zero89 E30 325is Lachs Silber - currently M20B31, M20B33 in the works, stroked to the hilt...

Lets get a video of it parked, and give it a few revs (you can rev the motor under the hood, at the throttle body. If you don't know how to do that, when the motor is off, and the hood is open, stand next to the open driver's door, and press on the gas with your right foot, it should become clear what to move when the motor is running.Originally posted by Matt-Bhey does anyone know anyone who gets upset and makes electronics?
