10w-50 summer up to 43c ambient oil temp up to 105c
10w-40 winter down to 0c ambient oil temp up to 85c

Gives good pressures, could use a better viscosity for cold weather 10w-40 still a bit thick on cold mornings

Problem with oil companies they dont give data at 0c normally only 40c and 100c

The viscosity you need is strongly dependent on the oil temps

Depends on how much money you want to spend. The most important consideration is that there are enough additives in the oil to protect your cam/rockers.

I used the following study before switching to Cummins/Valvoline Premium Blue 15w 40 purchased at tractor Supply for $15 a jug (its just one gallon though):

So far so good as far as I can see, but I am not sure what I will switch to for the cold long Maine winter. A couple of years ago, it barely got above freezing the entire month of February.

From what I have read (and I am not an expert), the catalytic converter construction and placement will allow use of oil with higher additive levels such as diesel oil.

Good news for you is that the winter oil issue should not be an issue.

                          M20?
                          Castrol GTX
                          10w40 winter
                          20w50 summer
refer to your manual for what ambient temp/oil

Turbo, sure go synthetic. Otherwise, waste your money at your own discretion.

I have always been a fan of Castrol GTX as well but there is a little controversy over the zddp content on the newer formulas (amazing experience with Castrol GT back in the day too).

Just to be safe, I would consider an additive for the M20 if I used GTX.

why not buy an oil that doesnt need an additive?
