What a painful problem. Who milled the head? surely they would have checked the minimum thickness before letting it out the shop? Any option to take the head back cause it was milled out of spec? or did they tell you and you still went ahead?

If it were me id be getting another head that is in spec and using a normal gasket. few dollars up front, but less painful in the long run.

I've bought cars with that 'feature' before- both of them had no bottom end damage
        from the contact.

Honestly that is pretty surprising. I would have expected bottom end damage. Or the head being warped. Or the threads of the head bolts slightly messed up.
