    M20b27 turbo vs m60 swap

Hello, I am John from germany

In Germany many people make a m60b40 swap for 300hp but nobody boosted m20.

    Why not?

    I can get a m60b40 for free and a 5 gear transmission for 300$

My biggest problem are the brake-booster swap...

    My other option:

    122hp eta bottom with 320i (731) head
    Stock 2mm headgasket with arp-bolts (8,7:1)
    HX35 12cm
    Ebay turbo manifold

What do you think is better?

Entirely depends what you want, the two cars will have totally different characters.

    Some people want a V8

Some people think an E30 needs an I6 and do S52/54 swaps

Others think 4v engines are too much and prefer the M20 with either period n/a tuning, or a turbo.

You cant really reduce it to "whats the best way to have 300bhp"

      I think S50/ S52 / S54 Expensive in purchase and maintenance. 4000-6000

      M60b40 800

      M20b27 maybe 200-400

      ... only for engine

I'd have a turbo M20 over an M60 any day, for sheer power alone. It's downright easy to make 300whp with a turbo M20, that's not even close to pushing the limits of the engine, making 300whp with an M60 though, not as easy. If I want 400whp I can just turn up my boost appropriately - I have enough fuel and turbo to support it, probably not possible to make 400whp on a mere mortal's budget with an M60.

But... I don't have to deal with the TÜV, I can put any engine I can afford in my car without any need for approval from anybody, so your needs would are vastly different from mine.

Engine swaps are such a rare thing when you look at the number of cars in a state or country that regulations prohibiting them or making them harder to do legally are really quite a waste of time and taxpayer dollars. I'm willing to bet that over 99% of cars go from factory fresh to cheap recycled steel with the original engine. There is no sensible reason for any rule concerning it beyond "if it passes the emissions standards in place when the car was new, it's good to go."
