based on what uuc's website says, the e39 m62 6 speed uses a clutch with a 240mm diameter... so could i just use that clutch with a 5 speed out of a e34 530i? I have a line on a 5 speed transmission for $350, but if I can't get it to work correctly because I can't find a clutch that will work I will just start saving for the 6 speed.

I don't think anyone really makes performance clutches for 530i 5 speed cars do they?

So if I can just use the clutch out of a e39 540i then should I use the flywheel that would come out of the 34 530i? Can you even turn a dual mass flywheel for reuse, or would I even need to?

Damn, another V8er in NE lol.

I've got kind of the opposite though haha, an m60 with a 6 speed. I've got an e39 M5 clutch and flywheel, so I'm not sure what I'm doing in that regard either.

I know that the e39 540i clutch will work on an 530i flywheel though, if that helps you at all.

Looking at the sites that sell lightweight flywheels I more or less figured out the the clutch for the e39 540i and a clutch from the e34 530i are the same diameter. That still leaves me with the question as to if the input shaft on both transmissions is the same size. If it is then I am golden, and i will just go with a lightweight flywheel and clutch setup from a e39 540i. Any idea about the input shaft diameter?

5-speed 'box has smaller clutch shaft than 6-speed, so 540 clutch disc won't be suitable with 530 'box.
            -E34 530, E39 530, E39 540, E39 M5 have 240mm clutch.
            -E34 540 has 265mm clutch.

I doubt the performance difference in clutches comes from the clutch-disc itself, but from the pressure plate which bolts on also to 530 double-mass flywheel. So use 530 clutch disc and e39 540 pressure plate and you should be fine..

All the V8 flywheels bolt to all V8 engines (M60, M62, S62), but the clutch shafts are different diameter in 5- and 6-speed boxes. The clutch slave cylinder seems to be the same in E34 530 and 540, so there won't be problems with clutch movement.

Thanks for the response. I have just deduced that from some searching on the web again. e39 540i 6 speed has a 1 3/8 inch 10 tooth input shaft whereas the e34 530i 5 speed is only 1 1/8 inch 10 tooth...

So I guess I will just go e39 540i lightweight flywheel and pressure plate, and use the e34 530i clutch disk.

So i have done a little more digging and have come up with a few things...

                1. Looks like a set of e53 (X5) 4.4L exhaust manifolds can be used without modification...
                2. If you plan to use the 5 speed from behind a e34 530i it shares clutches with the e36 m3 as they are the same transmission, just a different bell-housing. The clutch diameter is even correct. There should be a good deal of performance clutches available for these cars too!!!
                3. A light-weight flywheel for a e39 540i should work as the clutch surface is the correct size.
                4. With the 5 speed I should be able to use a e30 M3 drive shaft... From the sounds of it, I should be able to run a e36 328is drive shaft too.

Now to start saving and buying parts!

                      1. Yes, but they cost something around 750€ (~1000$). I think some E39 right hand side manifolds fitted too, not sure though..
                      2. Oh really, that's good to hear! Then there shouldn't be problems with clutch.
                      3. -
                      4. Yes that's true, though you might need to shorten it depending on your engine position. E36 328 driveshaft fits too, as do early 325e and all 324td shafts. It still doesn't make it stronger, so you might end up in a broken driveshaft situation like this (5-speed & M60 & 325 driveshaft):

Very nice! So it will have enough torque to twist driveshafts... Sounds like way too much fun! Thanks again for the follow up!
