I can't believe some of you are suggesting longer gears. These things are a slug with 4.1

I didn't find the change to the 3.73 to be as dramatic as some of you are making it out to be. If you do any driving on the highway, it's a step-up from the 4.10 in my opinion.
It has slightly less "snap" acceleration-wise, making it feel more like a normal car, but it's definitely not sluggish and I personally love not having to change gears so quickly. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if 0-60 times improved.Comment

Who the hell cares about 0-60? News Flash: you're going to lose to that Accord next to you at the light.
I just popped a 4.45LSD into mine a few weeks ago. I like it better than the 4.10. It's a little peppier. RPMs only went up 2-300 at freeway cruising speed.
As mentioned before, these cars aren't gear limited.Originally posted by Grueliusand i do not know what bugg brakes are.Comment

uhh wut? how does it not change the top speed? you install a longer gear it will give a greater top speed, shorter gives lower top speed last time i checked...the top speed of an M42 powered car probably doesn't change or goes down with an excessively long rear diff ratio.
E30s are almost *never* gear speed limited. I don't get why people think a 4.10 or higher makes the top speed lower. I also don't understand the desire to go 120mph in 3rd gear..
for now yes. I am an exception to most because im boosted. more power changes things, especially when you want to have time to build boost instead of having to shift all the time.
srsly? race an accord at a light? cmon nowWho the hell cares about 0-60? News Flash: you're going to lose to that Accord next to you at the light.

yeah, are you hitting the limiter in 5th gear? no? then you're not changing your top speed with a shorter diff. You might actually lower it with a taller one since the car will no longer have enough torque in 5th gear to push through the air at high speed.
and it WILL take longer to get there. aside from shifting times (you still have 5 gears so it doesn't change that), a shorter diff will accelerate faster than a taller one. it's basic math..Comment

there's a 3.46 for M42 for sale on the local craigslist.

honestly, with the stock motor, a 4.10 is about right. Any shorter and it would get to be a pain, and any longer and the poor thing would be even more of a gutless wonder in daily driving. It just isn't practical to wind the motor up to higher RPM to spin a taller diff in daily driving to get the same performance out of it. I'm going to a 3.73, but that is only because of the turbo, and I'm doing a lot more highway driving than I used to.Comment

In my boosted car I went from the 4.10's to the 3.73's and HATED it. Took longer to build boost and "felt" slower. It might be a tad faster from 0-60 because of one less shift... but other times it is ALOT faster because of the decreased boost time.
That's been my experience anyway... ymmv."A good memory for quotes combined with a poor memory for attribution can lead to a false sense of originality."

maybe im confused as well... I dont know why but i love the 293. If you want it quick use lower gears. all your really doing is moving 100 whp in most m42s around some. Shit even when I was on a stock motor I ran a 293 from a 410 and loved it.
it all comes down to how you want to drive. Ive got multiple diffs so if im not feelin the longer 293 I swap to a 410.
After you swap diffs a few times you get good at it. I can do a diff swap in less than 20 min...
