    180 na horse ?

Hey I was searching for some NA builds, but couldn't really find anything useful. Is 180 NA bhp doable without going all out ridiculous $10k into the build? Basically I'm asking if this motor is worth building up for the average person on the average budget.

Thats not too much more than a simple turbo build is it? I think 180 na hp for 2k would be worth it for me.

As far as I have been aware, 180hp was about the most one could reasonably make from an M42 before getting super expensive? I have heard of M42/44 hybrids reaching that kind of output.

See thats the thing. You said NA so I assume strictly NA which simply isnt that cost effective at all.

For 1k ish you can do a pretty simple turbo m42 running on stock motronic and make over 200hp.

Its been done several times. Danny, a member here did it. He later went MS but thats beside the point

Cheap. Just get a Honda S2000 motor, bolt in, get 240 hp AND a 6- speed.

Sorry, didn't realize I was looking at the M42 forum. That was a 2.8l M20.

Not that is matters now but there was someone on M42club who rebuilt an M42 with M44 rods and crank and s50 pistons or something like that. Anyways it was a modist, budget build and pulled 180hp out of it.

With the stock intake. I would also suggest looking at the MM M42 intake and replicate the pulse cambers.

You will not get over 160BHP with bolt-ons. You must increase displacement and compression if you want to hit 180BHP. A custom chip or stand-alone ECU is mandatory as well, plus the associated tuning on a dyno.

If you have a $10k budget, your answer is right here.

I installed a Rally 2100 engine with every possible option about a month ago. Rated at 205BHP, hoping to hit closer to 210-215BHP with my custom M30 air box and MAF converison. You need to really LOVE the M42 to drop that kind of money for that little power, because you can get 2x the power for 1/2 the cost with forced induction or a 6 cylinder swap. Keep that in mind.
