My 318is is making a terrible noise! (with video)

    Hmmm....you know, there is one other thing it could be. The original oil pump pressure regulator can fail. Either the spring breaks, or the plunger seizes in place, both of which would lead to low oil pressure and you would have to rev the engine up to get sufficient pressure.

    The parts I am talking about are 5-8 in this diagram. The original metal plunger, #5, was metal and would get stuck. The new design is plastic.

    It's a bitch to get at this stuff though. It is all in the bottom of the timing case and you need to move the upper oil pan to get at it.

      here is what my bad timing chain tensioner sounds like. it's a sound that is pretty clearly coming from the timing case; sounds a bit different than OPs. my sound also goes away at 2.2k rpm.

        I drained the oil and pulled the lower pan when I got off work today. The pan was clean. I was planning on pulling the upper to check the gasket around the oil pump and see if it shifted so thanks for letting me know about the regulator. I will order those parts up tonight and replace it while I got the pan off.

          Looks like I have found my problem. I am also going to replace the oil relief valve while I am here. Any easy ways of getting off the secure clip?

            You should be able to use circlip pliers to get that off, other than that a small screwdriver/awl + needle nose pliers. It should be replaced as they are often damaged taking them out, so I hope you ordered a new one.

            It also looks like you are missing a piece of the pan gasket ... did that transfer to the pan when you pulled it out?

              The piece was on the pan but was ripped so I am thinking air was getting passed which was causing my problems. I have a new relief valve on the way along with a new gasket.

                Well, glad to hear you seem to have found the issue. The circlip is not too hard to get out. The plunger...could be a pain if it seized. Post pics if anything in there is broken!

                    That's the bottom of the engine with the sump removed. The rectangular opening is the oil intake and the round one contains the oil pressure relief valve.

                      Good news! Yesterday I pulled the relief valve and it was the original metal one. I replaced it with the new plastic one along with a new gasket. Filled it with oil today and it is running smooth! No more ticking what so ever. The engine runs really good. Now its time to give it a good buff and polish.
                      Here it is as it currently sits. Completely original!
