    G240 tranny fluid type

Thought I'd get better responses here instead of the transmission section. I'm going to do a fluid flush of the tranny, and will need to buy the fluid. I haven't yet checked under to see what color my sticker is or even if it's still there, as apparently there are two different fluid types for the g240.. But from what I understand is that most m42 (and most e30) guys seem to just use Redline MTL regardless, as it is considered superior for Getrags. Even heard that a lot of experts use MTL for any BMW's regardless of transmission type.

So really, is it safe to say I should use MTL or is it really worth checking for the sticker on the housing? Ive done my research on this for my e39, but there's a lot more info on the webs for that than for g240s

Redline MTL all the way. I think mine had the ATF sticker, but I always used MTL. Actually, I run Redline MT-90 because it is thicker, and my transmission sounds like a coffee can full of rocks when I sit at idle because of the super light flywheel I have. If you have a stock flywheel you'll be fine with MTL.

i have 91 318i as well, i did my research and tried both ATF and Redline MTL. i think the redline oil would be your best bet! its perfect for socal weather. you should tried both to see which you like better

Ok cool guys thanks, that's what I was looking for. I have a slight whine in 1st and 2nd gear so I'm hoping this will help quiet it down a little

I just ordered some MTL yesterday... The 75w80 stuff, did I do wrong and need the MT90? I could probably dump this into my truck's t56 and buy some mt90... I do have the coffee can noise in 4th and 5th under decel, but I have no idea what's in the trans currently.

edit: I have an m20 single mass FW

any of the mentioned fluids will work fine. Ive been running Castrol import ATF for years. All G240 trans are ATF only I believe. I have never seen one use anything else.

I also have used castrol ATF since I've owned the car, although I'm going to try mt90 soon because during hard driving/track situations the car has a hard time going from 3rd to 2nd. I'll report back when I do.

                    Please do report back.

So I'll use redline, now the only question is should I use the 75w80 or go with the thicker mt-90?

Changed my fluid today, about 3/4 of a liter of greenish brown oil came out, fairly heavy consistency, Heavier than the MTL... I pumped basically all of 2 L of the MTL 75w80 into the trans. The old stuff wasn't ATF for sure...

I took it on a short drive, first impression was that 1st was a little bit harder to get into in the driveway. My 5th gear buzz/marble noise was a bunch quieter, but the marbles noise in 4th was the same-ish.

Shifting seemed like it was more notchy than it was before. Almost felt like the old stuff was damping the shifts. My 2nd synchro (worst one) doesn't seem any happier with new oil. I tried to shift pretty fast 1->2 and it seemed pretty pissed about it and didn't let me in for a sec. All the other gears seemed ok, but I only ever double clutch downshift...

Kind of disappointed that the 2nd gear synchro wasn't happier. I'll let it go a week or so and report back again...

I don't think my drive was long enough to let it warm up very well...

Edit: May as well go for the MT90 oil for a little more weight.

Ya thinking I may as well go with the thicker mt-90.

When you can, get the fluid warmed up and report back. I read that that for some it would feel notchy when cold but fairly smooth when the fluid thins

I've run MT-90 in my G240 for the past 3 years - no dramas.

Ya, will do, probably will be on Monday, should be able to get it nice and warm over ~40miles on the freeway then my favorite backroad

I only drove it ~7 miles then stopped for 10 mins then that same 7 miles home today.

I run synthetic ATF (free Mercedes extra ;-). Perfect shifting cold or warm, and, more surprisingly, no rattle with a 12 lb flywheel. I really think my trans had a very easy 250k miles. It shifts like butter.
