    89 325is driveshaft installed in 86 325es

I am hearing different stories on the possibility of a 89 325is (manual) driveshaft working in a 86 325es (manual) car. I've performed searches in various places and can't determine if this is so. Has anyone successfully done this? My 86 325es needs a driveshaft and there is one on CL locally that is rebuild with roughly 3k miles on it for 75.00 but it came out of a 89 325is.

Don't quote me but the shafts might be the same except the es might have the large guibo. So might not work.

As long as both cars use the same size guibo it will absolutely interchange. You'll need to swap out the center support bearing though. Early model and late model CSBs are different.

You might have a big flange tranny or you may not...either way at that price you buy that driveshaft, change the center support bearing and if you have to...change the output flange on the trans. I traded a small flange for a large flange with someone on r3v because I wanted to convert my turbo car over to the larger style guibo. It's a pain matching up flanges but not that big of a deal if you can get a nice driveshaft that cheap.

          These.

If it doesn't fit, you can always swap the output flange. Not that big of a pain.

The guy sold the quibo with the trans that went with the shaft. He's not sure of the guibo size. Did the 89is come with the big guibo? Mine only looks to be about 6" in dia.
If his did have the big guibo, could I just get the big guibo with the correct flangeand be good to go?

IIRC, late models all have the small guibo. but yes. u can change the output flange on the early trans (big guibo set up) to the late model flange (small guibo).

In my experience the late models had the large guibo.

That's where it gets ugly doesn't it? I did some research on this a while back and it seems that 86-87 325's, M3's and some 325i convertibles (perhaps late model?) came with a large guibo setup but everything else including the iS had the smaller guibo. You would think that they all used the larger style later on but that's not the case.

That's very strange. I tried researching which DS came with which but it just pissed me off. I ended up just looking for fat driveshafts or skinny ones lol.

Now I have an extra one of each. FML.

I have owned and worked on more E30s than possibly anyone here and I have never seen a late model with a large guibo.

Hmm. I pulled a DS from the junkyard a while back that was a large guibo out of a late model. Also, the G260 I got when I did my 5-speed swap was from a late model and had the larger guibo/DS.

What is considered a "late" model? What is considered a "early" model? Does anyone know the differences between all possible (manual) shafts? Are they all the same when it comes to the mounting flange to the diff?

To the diff they're the same. One shaft is fatter than the other and has a larger guibo requiring the larger output flange on the transmission.

Do you remember what models they were and if they were convertibles or not?
