I've got a 325i but my tranny fluid cap says ATF only... Kind of confused... Not quite sure if the previous owner may have replaced it or that's what it really uses.

Then use ATF only. Some manuals use ATF, it's no mistake. Some people like Redline ATF4+ synthetic.

Or just take a look at the fluid that comes out. It's very easy to tell the difference between ATF and gear oil. Color, thickness, and smell are completely different.

you aree looking at the "CAP" on your power steering system. it says atf only.

Ok no offense. Lets take this slower. You are not ready to change your manual transmission oil yourself.

Get a paper repair manual, bentley or haynes. Start to read about the process again and again. It needs a tool thats not always easy to find. Read it beginning to end, 10 times. Leave it in the bathroom.

your manual transmission is changed by a 17 mm allen key. Do you have one of those?

theres a tag undeneath the trannny by the drain plug actually. If its red it takes atf. If its green it takes full synthetic mt 90. ( mobil 1 actually is what it orignally said) if it has no tag it takes regular 70-80 wt gl4 or synthetic redline mtl, or rp synchromesh.

There's a sticker on the Getrag 240 (5 spd manual) that says ATF only. Despite that, me and every M42 guy I know has been putting RedLine MTL in for at least a decade with no problems. It shifts a hell of a lot smoother that way.

If you have a red tag use mtl. or better yet use dexron vi its semi synthetic for 4$ a quart at walmart. Best stuff in the world.

Look for a tag as stated in this thread. If no tag, gear oil.
