no. not by looking at that one.

your best bet is to take off the rear cover, count the teeth on each gear, and divide the big number over the little one.

the next best would be to spin the pinion shaft and count the rotations of the axle shafts.

Well, it LOOKS like a diff tag, but it lacks the right NUMBERS to be a diff tag.

I'm with Flyboy, but I'd just count the revs. It's not an ix diff, is it?

i like the way you think but what e30 came with that ratio?

perhaps a manual 318i cabrio with cold weather package? i've had a few of these over the years and can't recall if it was 4.27 or 4.29

i guess it would be a good idea to just ask the op what vehicle it came out of?

The S at the end is an indication of it's an LSD.

4.27 was in the auto '91 318i softtop, it's true. Small case, tho.

If it's a 188, take the cover off, look at the markings on the ring gear:

I'd suggest it's likely a 4.27, but the easy way to see if that's around the mark is to turn the output shafts and see how many rotations the input shaft does.

Easier than tearing the diff apart to get a quick idea.
