Depends on the vehicle/engine, intended purpose of the vehicle/engine, and budget.

For an M20 you can buy an 'i' flywheel for $50, spend $100 having it machined down from 17 lbs to 12 lbs, and spend $50 having it balanced. You have $200 in a light flywheel. But you have to do some research to find someone to do the work and you have to pull the flywheel from a junk car or wait for one to pop up for sale.

You could also buy a light flywheel new for $300-700. Ready to bolt up with no extra time wasted at the machine shop.

Honestly, I have no idea what was going through my head when I said $300 for a new flywheel...

You can get a new light flywheel for $300 or less on Ebay though. Turner also sells flywheels for some engines for under $400. $300 was ridiculous to say though.. Sorry.

ok, won't make new tread, so I ask here.
I have single mass flywheel, I want to make my engine a bit more responsive to gas pedal, plus maybe it will positively affect on engine ''power'' when accelerating, so I'm thinking about little shaving off my flywheel. (I think now I have 6,2? kilograms standart flywheel (from 1991 325i coupe))
question is, how much I can shave off(what would be light but reasonable weight for flywheel), so the car/engine stays drive able on street(it won't throw me in front window when I lift off gas pedal etc :D), and it won't start to rattle gearbox at idle like b*tch :D

engine is m20b28 with medium big cam.

              hope for some recommendations :)

12-13lb for stock fw, no guarantees on the rattle as some boxes do it worse than others

Yep, you can get rattle even with a stock flywheel. Stock M20 flywheel in my car rattles when the AC is on and the idle drops. 4 cylinder though, a little rougher than an M20.
