Rubber cover that goes over External Fuel Pump. Anyone knows the function of this?

Has anyone seen this rubber cover that goes around the external fuel pump?

Does this help with sound deadening to help prevent the sound from the fuel pump to be heard inside the cabin?

I am attaching info from RealOEM. Unless I am mistaken, this did not come from factory with this, did it?

I tried searching for the part numbers through Google and R3V, I could not find much info other than one person selling it from a E28 forum.

The real question I have, is what is it actually for? Is it just to prevent dirt to get on the fuel pump, or does it serve a purpose as a sound deadening contraption?

I don't recall seeing that but it looks like it was only used from 06-86 to 09-87. My guess it was there to dampen the noise of the pump.

There was a point at which BMW and other German manufacturers went completely insane with dampening fuel line. For reference, cast your eyes to the battery tray area and wonder why in the heck BMW needed to route the fuel lines through an exchanger in the AC line(s). Wish I had a better pic.

Dwight at Zionsville Autosport told me that this line is a rare hot-weather market feature. Not sure where the hot markets are.

Going to guess not in MD where the car was originally sold IIRC. The VIN was: WBAAE5408H8811083 which technically makes it an 87, but whatever, and the lines are all listed as normal AC components.

              EDIT:

Was looking for something else and stumbled on the listing for the AC system fuel heat exchanger: http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E3...ooling_system/

I had the fuel system cooler on my '87 (Build Date: 19.12.1986) Canadian market 325is. So definitely not a hot-weather market.
                Tore it out in 2016.

Should've sold it as an ultra rare part. Same thing as self leveling rear suspension, neat, but useless and outdated.
