well i see more where you're coming from....but you're grouping all modding for fun into a stupidity category, which is not right.
When i turbocharged my car i wasnt expecting to go drag it for cash or pwn the local autocross.
1) i did it for fun, i had a will and a way and wanted to try it out
2) yes, most definetly i wanted the car to be faster, which was accomplished
but even while admitting that, an argument to counter your point would be that they are putting shinny things on their car because they like the way it looks. Therefore the purpose would be to increase (in their eyes) aesthetic qaulities.

no real purpose? Thats subjective. While i agree that no, an aluminum wing serves no real purpose, you're speaking from a purely performance aspect.
