Hey guys,
Good news. finished the last $50 mod: Silicone Elbow upgrade. I wanted to to the silicone elbow mod for some time now. Many of the E36 owners and tuners have started to do this and actually picked up dyno gains (Mpact motorsport and also Samco both make E36 elbow). They claim anywhere from 3-8HP gains depending on mods & etc. I figured it was about time somebody did it for the E30 so I decided to be the first to give it a try.
As you can see i totally eliminated the rubber elbow along wiht some of the other stock stuff. I also relocated the icv to the backside of the intake manifold and bent the bracket alittle to do so. I then used 5/8ths rubber "heater hosing" which can be found at any autozone, it retrospect i probably should have gotten 7/8 so it would't have to stretch as much on the ICV ports but either way its reinforced so its fine. I realized that by just making the crank case vent a open air one that i could eliminated the need for the crankcase vent hose to the stock throttle body before the flap. This allowed me to run the ICV directly before and after the throttle body flat for a very nice OEM solution.
What this does is allow ALL the air entering the engine to be fully metered by the air sensor (which would probably theoretically reduce a lean condition if you had one). It also is a smooth transistion instead of the stock ribbed one. Also the stock rubber ones get brittle and crack so if you need to replace your stock one might as well get a silicone one that will never go bad.
The crank case vent hose was just twisted to run in a U-shape instead of S-shape and I just ran it out the exhaust side engine on the opposite side of the intake manifold bracket.
Overall performance, the idle is excellent and no hiccups/ hesitation whatsoever and it actually feels alightly better than stock. The power levels are slightly better and powerband is slightly smoother but nothing rediculous by any means. I will also note that my coolant gauge was running dead center during the short run i did in the canyons after the install and usually its slightly over to 3/4 so this may have solved the lean contiditon i was having.
Conclusion: Overall I am very hapy with the mod, it can be done for under $50 and roughly 1 hour of labor. For materials you will need 5/8th hosing (comes in like 5 foot lengths), air breather, brass adapter vaccum fittings, and some small o-clamps if you dont have any already. I definitely recommend for a nice little mod. Most importantly of all, this allows me to easily upgrade from 2.75 to a 2.75-3.0" HFM reducer once up upgrade to the E36 HFM. Anyways enjoy the pics.

You think you can feel 1-2hp?

Budget Beatoff? Project Butt Dyno sounds good though.
