    Works great.

No, NOW its an old ass thread.

    Rob,

Is Parkerbink's statement correct - you moved the fan to do this?

I don't think you need to move the fan

I'm going to try swapping to the lower temp fan switch and see how that works.. I'll probably keep the clutch fan in the trunk just in case.

I was just talking to Trent about this last night. He said that what he's always done is just removed the large engine fan/fan clutch, and left the motor with the stock electric fan that's in front of the radiatior, and swapped in the fan switch from an E36 M42. He's going to get me the part number for the switch today. The stock electric fan moves a shitload of air, more than enough to cool the radiator without the big engine-driven fan. He told me that removing the engine-driven fan is also quite a noticeable difference.

I just wanna make my fan to it either runs on, if I flip a switch, or runs either a low or high speed depending on the coolant temperature.

Anyone know how the temp sensor works, and how I can make my fan run two speeds depending on temp? (Wiring in the switch to a relay will be the easy part - and it'll only override the auto part of it)

part # for that E36 switch:

              61 31 8 361 787

it turns on at 80c/88c instead of 90c/98c like the E30 switch.

Intersting. So - out of the three wires - one gets power when it his 80c and BOTH get power when it reaches 88c, then one is ground?

I'll probably look in the Bentley...but doesn't hurt to ask. ;)

Since my ghetto-ass POS has a dead switch, I simply wired it into my foglamp switch...since I have no foglights, either!

Gets hot, push button. Cools off, push again!

Gonna get one of those E46/E36 switches soon.

Funny you did that.As I was flipping through one of my old roundel mags, there was a little article which one of the writer's did the samething.

My fan clutch is going out.So all I have to do is remove fan clutch and swap the E36 switch: 61 31 8 361 787 , and I'm set right?

so you guys that are putting in the e46 switch, what is the point of this? If i remove the fan clutch assembly altogether and leave the front electric fan in place, would this fan turn on if the car heats up? or only if i turn on the a/c? confused***

i dont know why everyone has so much trouble with overheating, i took my fan out before summer and hooked up the ac fan to run on low all the time and high when it would normally switch on to low. and i RARELY get above 1/4 temp the one time i got to HALF was when it was 98 dergrees outside and i was siting at a light.

Care to explain how you did it step by step? I would like to know because that's exactly what I wanna do.

What did your REAL water temp gauge say? Or do you only have the little overheat gauge?

I simply ran wires to the foglight switch to turn the fan on high, manually.
