I know, I'm not worried about the cost, just wondering if it mattered if it was used or new. I'll just get one new.

i ripped out the factory fan and mounted a 3300cfm fan on the radiator, using the factory wiring. I will have to see about getting that fan switch

Nope, I can't figure out how the brackets are supposed to mount to the body of the car...

ddavidv, got the brackets and all the hardware and they fit correctly but the bottom mounting bushing/bracket seems out of place or off by about an inch from the hole .

Off vertically, or off side to side?
Mine was off vertically. I think mine ended up just being used to keep the fan from pivoting and never actually wound up bolted to the bottom of the radiator support.

Off side to side, basically the top left and right metal brackets lined up fine but not the 3rd mounting bushing with the expanding rivet.

my e30 didnt have a fan for a few weeks of driving and the temp would stay between the 1/4 and 1/2 mark. but stting in traffic for more than 3 minutes the temp would start to rise, and quickly. not good. i would leave the fan on and not have to worry about the car overheating in a drivethru or in traffic or something.

I have an electric fan on my m42. would it be necessary to put in the lower temp fan switch when the thermostat is 88 degress? seems like the t stat would just be opening and closing all the time if i did.

Also i tried to test the fan using a match on the sender but the fan never came on, however, when i jump the pins on the connector for the sender it works, so i guess i need a new sender.

                        Rob,

Is Parkerbink's statement correct - you moved the fan to do this?

it should run better because there isnt that extra coming from the engine.

I noticed a strange sound when my engine was running... looked and noticed 6 out of the 9 fan blades were broken. Ordered the fan clutch / E39 oil filter cap wrench from TMS along with the coolest $10 part nut that replaces the fan.

I searched for threads on how to remove the fan... and laughed when it took 5 seconds and almost punching me in the face to get it started off. Removed it and the shroud, installed nut.... done.

Ordering the E36 switch, and water wetter. Don't think cooling will be much of an issue. If it is, and i ruin the engine, M50 time.

I run a 16" universal fan on my M42. It clips to the radiator and I use a fan controller I got at Orielly's with it. I think it was about $75 total and it's preset to come on around 200 degrees and it has a remote wire I hooked to the AC so both the stock and the new electric fans are on when the AC is on. I just pulled the fan off the clutch and left the clutch there. Cleans up the front a lot without the shroud.

Any idea how much space there is to mount the fan there? The ones I am looking at are about 4" thick.
