Locals don't have Issues with built 188 units at 500 - 600 rwhp. Many lsx bmw's running around the bay area.
If the budget allows a 210mm would always be a reliability upgrade.
2 ear rear diff conversion is available from some lsx swap kit makers; bolt on item with aftermarket ear or a native 2 ear cover also works.
400hp is proven to be OK with the z3m heavier duty cover.OBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25
Z4 non powered steering rack fits e30
Euro e46 2005/6 320d 6mt gearbox into E30 with M20 hardy and beck 1985 327s engine
