Rear trailing arm. Material? Can't weld.

    Hey guys,

Trying to weld some spring centering pieces to my rear trailing arms. I can't get the welder to work.

Measurement between a clean, shiny ground and my clean, shiny perch is over 10Mohms on a multimeter.

Are the trailing arms made of some odd material? Should I be looking at high strength bonding agents.

    Help!

(I've cleaned these off more since this picture)

Your problem is that you should be throwing those in the dumpster.

That is complete junk. In the picture, what you are calling clean, is just polished rust scale. Scan the classifieds, get some new rust free ones. And please don't learn to weld on suspension.

I didn't know it was possible to polish rust scale?

That picture was when I first started cleaning them up. They were a LOT cleaner when we attempted to weld tonight.
I wasn't the one welding. My friend who has plenty of welding experience was.

I found a set of better condition ones. Going to pick them up tomorrow morning. Anything I should keep in mind when swapping them out?

The only way those arms are coming clean is with electrolysis. Worked quite well with my arms, though yours are 10x worse. Probably take a few days in the tank to get all that off.

Threw some 2-part Epoxy at them last night.
I don't expect it to work, so I also just came back from picking up a used set of trailing arms.

Your friend has welding experience and actually tried welding to that?

Since you are in there, I would paint and put in new bushings.

                    That's nothing a grinder can't fix.

As I said before, I cleaned up the area much better after that picture was taken.

Somehow I polished the rust scale and it looked like shiny metal, even under flashlight.

                        My thoughts exactly.
If my "cold weld" epoxy holds for a few months until I put the car away for the winter, I'll drop the subframe and do it all at the same time.

                              It's not JB weld.
Apparently this stuff is used to fix cracked engine blocks, among other things.

I'll check it regularly, I can always throw on the trailing arms I bought if need be.
